Smile union street.

who knows the name of the church with graveyard,which was exhumed either late 60s or early 70s down on right near the bottom of union st.its been buggin me since i saw the old photos.

It was on School St. Between the Nags Head and Carol Cowburns estate agency.
I spent many an hour as a child watching Mr Fitz shoeing horses. I was always absolutely fascinated.

thanks i remember now school st,i also spent time watching mr fitz,also spent time in the horseshoe years later,(under age,they used to call it the learners arms,bob sharples was the landlord,then a dark guy called doug after he moved doug took a pub in darwen ,MILL HOUSE,orMILL GAP cant remember now,he was a great caracter.thanks for the info

Think your graveyard was called Macphelah;remember seeing an ancient photo of sheep grazing on it prior to being taken to nearby abattoir.I remember the graveyard being there and remains being removed when work started there.

the Church and graveyard were the Union St Wesleyan Chapel.

And the blacksmiths was Fitzpatricks at ther bottom of Crawshaw St, next door but one to my Aunt Maud's

The Machpela Graveyard was on Hyndburn Rd, or as it was known when the Baptist Chapel was there as Allom Lane. That site was known to those who worshiped there as "Gods Little Acre". They originally came from the Rossendale Valley back in the 1700's, they then moved to Clayton. Their last place of worship was Cannon St Baptist.

Im sure you are correct,i think i was wrong to agree with school st,that was the one that ran up from the horseshoe to cowburns i think,memories not as good as it was once.cheers
