Interesting fact about Accrington, it has a war memorial on wheels.

Do they have to put a pound in the slot when they want to move it about for Rememberance Day?

No it's true.

There is a perfectly nice one in Oak Hill Park, but the one they use for the offical Rememberance Day is wheeled out infront of the Town Hall every year.

Perhaps Peter Britcliffe doesn't want any of November's mud on his bell bottoms, if he was forced to go up the park.

Lest we forget.

Hardly the Somme though is it?

Re: unusual facts about Accrington or Oswaldtwistle

Don't you have a remembrance day march led by the scouts and cubs, from the church to the memorial to place the wreaths then?

Re: unusual facts about Accrington or Oswaldtwistle

William Shakespere appeared in Accrington on the occasion of the opening of the town's fine market hall. This was not the Bard of Stratford-on-Avon, but a concert pianist of the same name. A newspaper report of the time said that Mr Shakespere "executed Rigoletto on the pianoforte’’.

One interesting fact is that before the reorganisation (tinkering) Church was the smallest urban district in England and Oswaldtwistle was the largest. Yeah, I know, I'll get the anorak out.
