UPS - Scam ??

Is this another scam of some sort? Have had 2 E-mails so far addressed to different recipients, yet reached my Inbox :-

Headed with a tracking number.

"Unfortunately, we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient (s) address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.

Yours UPS "

Of course, haven't opened the invoice but just wondered, if it is a scam, how is it worked ? Both addresses they have put start with a 'K' as my e-mail address.

Re: UPS - Scam ??

Just by opening and reading the mail, you have caused your spam mail to increase.

Sounds very much like a scam.
If a parcel was sent you should have received a tracking number.
Go to the UPS website and log in the number, that will tell you where the parcel is...and if there have been any hiccups along the way.
Will even tell you the recipients signature name.
Good idea Kate not to open the link...as with all suspect emails...If in doubt ignore it or go the official website.

Only if you use the abomination that is HTML email.

For those of us that prefer to not fall foul of these we use plain text email as God himself intended email to be.

I would highly recommend everyone use plain text for mail and open attachments only if they are absolutely certain of its origin.

I think its the same old store if it looks to good to be true it probably is, or if in doubt ignore it, if they are intent on contacting you they will do but not by email unless you have specified that route

Re: UPS - Scam ??

I recently got an email supposedly from BT part of which is below:-

Quote:
Urgent - BT is making some changes to its email service. Emails you send from alternate BT Yahoo! Mail addresses may be blocked

Dear Customer,

We're upgrading the security of your BT Yahoo! Mail account to help prevent identity fraud and spam.

These enhancements will help protect you from 'spoofing' - when people use alternate addresses to disguise an email's real sender, possibly to commit fraud.

Making the improvements work
For the security improvements to work, we need you to take a few minutes now to verify each of the alternate email addresses you use in BT Yahoo! Mail. This will confirm that these email addresses are genuine. If you don't verify your alternate BT Yahoo! Mail addresses, you may get an Error 553 message and have difficulty sending emails.

Please verify addresses now to avoid blocking of your outgoing emails.
It looks genuine but then a lot of scams do.

There was also a link in this email that I was supposed to go to once I'd opened my bt account.
I haven't found any reference to this being a scam yet,

BUT, BT already know the email addresses I use so following the rule never give out your email addresses because BT say they won't ask for account details over the web, I'm ignoring it and suggest that if you get a similar email you do not send your details or click on the link.

That is what is puzzling me Less ... how come it came to me ? The addressee was obviously some fictitious address ?

Re: UPS - Scam ??

They BCC using brute force method to known ISPs

e.g.

[email protected]
[email protected]
...
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
...
[email protected]

etc ad infinitum.

Simple and effective and as they tend to do it from hijacked mail servers by teh time teh isps complain they are long gone.

Not even with HTML - the threat with this particular spam is contained within an attached ZIP file, which is not opened during the preview or regular view of an email. You have to open the attachment as a separate event.

HTML emails aren't that much of a threat as long as you take some small steps to protect yourself. Disabling scripting will prevent them from running most malicious code on your PC. Disabling the display of non-embedded images might protect you from increased spam. (The way it works is each image in the mail is linked as an ostensibly unique file on a server somewhere in the world. When it logs that that image has been accessed, it "knows" your email address is a live, spammable one.) Keeping your email client, windows system and antivirus software up-to-date is essential.

Re: UPS - Scam ??

I have had HTML disabled for many years.
When I get mail from such like as Marks and Spencer or Littlewoods, I have to click on a header banner to see pics of the items on sale.

I have a really tremendous spam problem.
I use Spamhilator and it is showing an average of 540 per day.
I know I have put my email address about - can't avoid it when you buy everything on line as I do. I have only one email address - the same one I have had since I 1st got a computer in about 1995.

It would be a good idea for me to set up another email addy for me to use by non spammers, but when all your shopping and finances are done on line, that would be a monumental task notifying all who need to know of the new addy.

So I think I am lumbered with the nuisance of it.
I can't think that Kate gets much spam or she wouldn't have opened that one.
If I read mine it would be the equivalent of a full time job.

I just hope that some way can be developed to stop this misuse of the internet.

PS I have AVG and two spyware progs in use - updated and scan daily

I get about 1,000 emails a day, about 75% of which are spam. I use K9 to filter them, and (in the last 44 days) have had 2 good emails from over 44,000 mistakenly identified as spam (false positives) and 183 spam emails mistakenly identified as "good" (false negatives).

The routine I have for scanning through emails to identify badly assessed emails takes about 30min per week (30 min per 7000 emails).
