Venetian blinds

When I moved in this flat 9 years ago I put up plastic venetian blinds at the four windows.

I am contemplating replacing them with aluminium venetian ones.

I have sent for a Hilarys Blinds brochure.
Has anyone here used that firm?

Are they very expensive and are they good value for money? frank opinions appreciated.

Alternateively, if you have got venetian blinds from some other firm, I would like their name and your opinions on their blinds too.

Sorry Margaret, couldn't resist.

Re: Venetian blinds

Why go from plastic to aluminium? Aluminium might be easier to kink when cleaning them and the coat could scratch through. Perhaps someone knows if there are advantages?

I would agree wth Gordon about not going for aluminium, plastic ones are OK but have you considered wood? The slats are more rigid and hence easer to clean.

I guess you are going for a firm like Hillarys bcause you need them made to measure and/or fitted for you. However if they are standard size and you can get someone to fit them for you try Dunelm Mill's website which has a range of both aluminium and wooden blinds at reasonable prices and they will deliver.

Re: Venetian blinds

I have had aluminium ones at a house I owned in the past. The slats are bigger and so are less cumbersome to dust.

Narrow slat plastic ones bend easily when you try to wipe them in situ, and as years have passed they are getting brittle.

These plastic ones have seen me through 9 years and were Glynn Webb cheapos, trimmed and fitted by me. I once was fit enough to take them down and soak them at least once a year. Now I don't have a bath to soak them in they are bothersome.

PS just seen your post Susie - will look for their website - thanks

I got some blinds from a chap who joined Accyweb about last October, mine weren't venetian but I know he does all types of blinds, He's called Michael. I'll take a look and see if I can find his brochure, I know the blinds he fitted were first class and very reasonable too, infact I'm thinking of replacing the blinds in both my living room and bedroom shortly and I'll certainly be contacting this chap, he's an Accy Lad, he lives and works in Burnley

Wait until after your bathroom refurb - plaster dust gets everywhere

Don't worry I am Margaret, think I'm going to shut myself in the living room while they're doing it, I have my oxygen plumbed in there so I'll take away the possibility of somebody doing a mick and standing on the pipes

They will require access to your kitchen sink for water to mix plaster.
If the layout of your flat is the same as mine, shutting yourself in the living room won't work.

Well it will be the same Margaret, but they've got water in the bathroom,

Not when the only appliance in there is the toilet!
They leave one for you 'temporary fixed' - just dont wobble when you sit on it

Yes plastic slat blinds can be fiddly to clean - I too found a dunk in the bath was the best way.
