I never thought that the verse about the captain was quite true

That won't be necessary Eric, thank-you (Had to Google it as I didn't know this particular sea-shanty.)

I didn't know this ditty
Though shocking it's quite witty.

In that particular crew
There was no-one I knew.
No able-seaman in sight
To fill up my night...
No "Jolly Rogers" for me -what a pity!

My goodness Di what a sheltered life you have led! - I know, a good convent girl!

Don't think Venus was ever a sea shanty - they are usually cleaner though still with suggestive words sometimes. Have many memories of drunken sessions at college with that and Kirriemuir, Eric's other suggestion, featuring on the menu of drinking/rugby songs.

Interesting how we have got on to this topic from a starting post about astronomy!

An old, romantic?

How very dare you.

No.

I am neither.

I'll stick with my nab 'em, and stab 'em method.

Much less mess.

It was your use of "beholding beauty" in the first post which had me fooled, Garinda,I really thought you were mellowing. Very clever, lulling people into a false sense of security, playing the romantic - is that how you cajole 'em near enough to do the nab and stab routine

My use of old was perhaps a little hasty (wouldnt wish to be tarred with the same brush after all). Thought you might appreciate this song, it has something the Bananarama version doesn't have.

I know Sue - that's me, through and through -such a sheltered life.

You wouldn't believe the half of it!

Re: Venus in Blue Skies.

On 5 and 6 June, Venus will appear as a small black dot on the Sun's surface in a rare transit, taking six hours to complete its journey. There's a great photo of the last transit in this article...

Unfortunately it will be dark in this country for most of the time the transit is happening. There is a Horizon programme on BBC2 tonight at 9pm.

Re: Venus in Blue Skies.

Tried to capture Venus as I see it for a few evenings then gave up as we have had hot weather and gathering storm-clouds every evening (sod's law!)

Have a few nice pics of clouds in pink skies -not quite the same thing, plus a photo of the May procession which came to the farm on May 31st - note people saying the rosary -they carry the statue here and the old ladies walk ahead throwing petals on the ground...
