Depends how little you think of the unemployed I guess. I think that it takes alot to stay at home and manage the household as your sole 'job', as you tend to get little chance to get away from it, where as some people see their job as a bit of an escape.
As I dont see any shame in being unemployed for any reason, then I dont see the shame of saying a retired person is unemployed, after all, they aren't actually being employed by anyone at that current time, so their for they are unemployed, though I guess in that sense business owners could refer to themselves as unemployed in those broad terms of mine rather than self employed, as they dont necessarily have to work if they have people to run the business for them.

Re: What job sector do you work in?
For those who didnt consider that you could get qualifications to be a librarian, think of the huge libraries there are that need a bit more than just putting books on shelves. The library here at uni is 3 storeys and the floors are massive. It takes alot of knowledge to know how to manage something like that, and they dont tend to be that many staff in them.

I followed the job centre search criteria but couldnt fit them all on. Perhaps thats why theres so many unemployed people in hyndburn, they simply cant decide which option to pick. Pkus I did it twice because the first time my options where too long

Re: What job sector do you work in?
Blazey, you may see no shame in being unemployed, but my work ethic means that being unemployed is something of a slur...especially if you are fit and healthy. Being retired is something entirely different to being unemployed.
I have never been unemployed in my life......however I did sign on and draw dole through the time when factories were on 3 day weeks because of power shortages.....but I did have a job to go to when this crisis was resloved.
I am not ashamed to be retired because I know that I have contributed to the wealth of this country....I would be ashamed to be unemployed....but that is a purely personal thing.
Oh and jobs were not easy to come by when I left school as there were many people looking for work at the time...it being a 'bulge' year...but I did get a job.

Re: What job sector do you work in?
I have always understood the generic term "unemployed" to mean employable but not working and claiming a related benefit. I didn't work, apart from short periods of casual CS work, for 20 years when my children were growing up. It was my choice and I didn't claim any benefits or NIC credit so I was not included in any government unemployment statistics. Now I am retired and I receive a State Pension for which I and my late husband have paid in NICs. I don't consider myself unemployed so I didn't tick any catagory in the poll.

My apolgies, I voted and then discovered that this thread was just for the locals! Unless of course the great State of Virginia can be considered a surrounding district! LOL

Re: What job sector do you work in?
Apparently under company rules I'm not allowed to post where I work (well currently unemployed but going back), but it's in retail.
I voted student as i'm currently unemployed as I thought I'd wait to settle in to Uni first.
I'm at The University of Hull doing a Politics degree. I love the philosophy/ideology debates we have combined with post 1945 political history. I dislike having to do my essays because I'm rather crap at writing my ideas down on paper.

I wouldnt say that to my sister. She spent 3 years at Manchester Polytechnic getting her qualifications plus then spending years working in Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, all the Rossendale libraries and now in Burnley.

Re: What job sector do you work in?
Sara
There are good and bad management in all organisations
I've worked for LCC for over 30 years and would say out of 8 immediate Line Managers 7 of them were good or excellent and 1 of them was horrendous and the 2 years that she was my Manager were the post difficult and horrible 2 years I've ever experienced.
With the other Managers we all had a common purpose in trying to give the best possible sevice, they would all muck in when required and their example spead throughout the rest of the Team
In terms of more Senior Managers given the size of the organisation they appear remote and that we are only a number and that may lead to a feeling of them becoming uncaring but perhaps thats down to the size rather than the culture of LCC however I can only speak from my experience and perhaps you have had different experiences
