What used to be there????

hiya people,
i moved to accrington about 2 year ago from up north, when i first got here i bought a dog and my girlfriend said come on i know a good place to take him for a walk, she took me to a place that i knew as the splash(mill hill picnic area) ive been goin there ever since for regular walks and always wonderd what it used to be!! most of it looks natural sort of like a valley but when you walk all the way to the end it looks like it,s been man made years ago to stream the water out of a bowl looking lake thingy into a drain then dissapears under the hill, now on 1 sighn it's got the name castle clough on another it's called hapton hall, when ive tryed to look it up (both names) im not getting nothing, i asked my mam to try and find out what it was, she couldnt find anything not even on an os or oc map what ever one of them is, so n e way after all that i basiclly just want to know what it was as its doin my head in now, if n e one know s what it was please let me know or even better if you know of n e where i can read up on it that would be great

thankx in advance!!!

Try typing Hapton into the search box on this site : http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Re: What used to be there????

Noooooooo Mick I know where Dean means, not Mill Hill in Blackburn but Mill Hill woods between Huncoat and Hapton. If you mean the "dip" next to the car park at the Huncoat side before you get to the ford, it used to be a lodge. It was known as Mill Hill Lodge when I lived in Hapton as a child and yes water did run out of it where you describe Dean.

Somewhere I think I have a very old photo of my Uncle leaning on a fence there. I'll have a hunt and see if I can find it. I'm notoriously hopeless at finding things I'm looking for so this could take some time.

Castle Clough and Hapton Castle are in a different location further down towards Padiham.

Re: What used to be there????

It's probably a common name in many areas. I only know what Dean meant because I used to play round there as a child. There's a bridge over the stream where the road/lane goes through the ford and many a time I sat on that bridge dangling me legs, eating jam butties and drinking corporation pop.

I used to wade through the ford too and get my socks wet which never went down well when I got home, so I used to take them off to try to dry them. Why it never occurred to me to take them off before wading through the stream and thus not get them wet at all I'll never know!
