Why in Lancashire?

Why in Lancashire are left-handed people called "Kaypodder's"? (spelling?).

Re: Why in Lancashire?

I've never heard that either.
I think this word is used -
cack-handed - definition of cack-handed by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

I've looked at a few lancs dialect sites and kaypodder isn't there.

Re: Why in Lancashire?

Driver at work calls it me every time he sees me writing (which is why i`ve tried looking it up before), I`ll ask him next time I see him. Also get cack handed from some others.

Re: Why in Lancashire?

cack handed is used down south, too, according to hubby.

It's more about not knowing your left from your right whereas kaypodder is specifically aimed at left handers.

Re: Why in Lancashire?

It`s not pronounced how it`s been spelt, it`s more like keypodder or koypodder. Still can`t find any info on it though, no matter which spelling i use.

I know it as keypodder, but know nothing of the origin of the word.

Re: Why in Lancashire?

As far back as I can remeber Keypod has alus refered to left handers.

Cack handed is used to refer to some one who is holding or useing something the wrong way, and mekin a reight mess o things.
What does the origin of the word matter, its what we say in certain circumstances, wether them southern jessies know what we mean, thats their ingnorance not ours.

Didn't know that, but I apply it to anyone south of Lanky Land, all the others are pudding heads.
