De Rose Family

Hello everyone,
My father was Gerard de Rose the portrait painter, born in Accrington on 21st August 1918. He was an only child. I believe one of his paintings hangs in the town hall?
His mother was Nellie Dean family of Carrara Cottage in Accrington.

She had married Ben Lee Herman de Rose; who changed his name to Paul Ehrlich, after his German uncle Dr. Paul Ehrlich. Paul had the "Paulerl Direction Orchestra" and played in and around Accrington. Paul for some reason left Nellie in about 1921 and as far as I know emigrated to Canada or America and was never seen again

Nellie had 4 or 5 sisters.
Thomas Dean was the father a stone mason, hence Carrara Cottage.

The only Dean trace I have was the late Leslie Dean, who had a daughter and son, Louise and John. Leslie's wife was Dorothy. John lived in London in the 80's but I lost track with him.

If there is anyone out there related or has information; I'd love to hear back from you. My email is: [email protected].

Many thanks,
Theo de Rose.

Re: De Rose Family

Good luck with your search, though I'm afraid I can offer no help.

It would be interesting to know if there are any paintings in Accrington, as these two that were sold at Sotheby's in New York, look fantastic.

Was your father educated in Accrington? Anymore information would be much appreciated, as I certainly think he should be in our Accrington Hall of Fame.

Re: De Rose Family

Was Nellie a nickname ? The 1901 census doesn't list her and I can't imagine her being born later than that to a mother who was already 53

Found out the question to my own answer

Nellie was indeed Edith E. The listing in the marriage records for 1917 match the detail in the first post ( Erlich or De Rose ). I suspect the E stands for Ellen which would explain where Nellie came from.

De Rose Family

How lovely that a son of one of "famous men" has written to our site. We should have a "Gerard de Rose" week.

De Rose Family

Dear June,
Thank you for your emails and photos; fantastic.
The last photo is of the portrait of a Texan Gerry painted in about 1970/71. He was a handsome man called Gerald Rose. From what I can remember it was a larger canvas.

At present I am trying to collate a list of all his works in view of contacting his old pals David Hockney and Peter Blake, to do a retrospective of his work as he was without question the only painter to paint the stars in the swinging sixties at great length and detail.

The hardest part of the family research is Gerry's dad as he left Nellie in about 1921 and they never saw him again. Trying to get links of Paul Ehrlich from US and Canada, but hard.

I have hundreds of photos of paintings so attached for all some of the more famous ones. Also a photo taken at The William Ware Gallery London 1969 of his first big exhibition. With him r to l: Charlie Drake, Gerry, Trevor Howard. Notice the drink and fag all in each hand, those where the days.

Thumbnails: Trevor Howard, David Hockney, John Wayne, Rod Steiger. Rat pack; Charlie, Gerry, Trevor.

Till soon,
Theo de Rose.

Is Carrara cottage still there? I have checked google maps and there appears to be only "one house" left on Oxford street on the right going down near the bottom. Could that be it?
