Dorothy Slater - 'Accrington's Armless Girl'

A couple of years ago I bought an old postcard from Ebay. It is a photo of a young girl called Dorothy Slater and has written at the side 'Accrington's Armless Girl'. She has signed it on the back. The photo shows her using her feet as hands.
Does anyone out there know anything about Dorothy Slater?

Re: Dorothy Slater - 'Accrington's Armless Girl'

There was a woman from Accrington called Agnes Wildman whose father cut her hands off when she was a little girl. She was known locally as the lady with no hands. I don't know of any others though, sorry.

Limbless: Legless, Armless, Human Torsos, etc.
This is the only thing I can see, not much info on it tho
They called her "The Accrington Armless Wonder Girl" according to this

There might be a way to contact the webmaster of this page and ask if they have any more info
Good Luck

Me too, but the worrying thing is when you look at it the day afterwards and see what you've written!

Re: Dorothy Slater - 'Accrington's Armless Girl'

I’ve a book somewhere with a Photo of Dorothy Slater using her feet to sign cards; apparently she made a good living from her ingenuity and was quite famous locally. The photo in the book is from the 30s or 40s and shows her in her teens (I think) it’s a look time since I read it. What I will do is pop home later and dig it out. I’ll scan it and put it up on here for you.

OK, I can’t do a scan because the books copyrighted, the Book is called; Accrington’s changing Face, By Frank Watson and Bob Dobson. It’s A4 Landscape in size and is wearing a bright Red Cover.

The piece about Dorothy Slater is on page 62 and is made up of the said postcard and an example of her writing, (her foot writing is better than my hand writing) which says “Best wishes and good luck from Dorothy” this is written in Pencil. Hang on, the message is give has been written by some else and then signed by Dorothy.

The facts about Dorothy’s life are given as been born in the mid 1920s and lived in Pendle Street; in the 1930s her family raised money for Dorothy by making and selling cards.

Dorothy was born without arms and was the last of five children; her mother was quite old when she had her. It is known that she could pick up pennies and hold a cup of tea with her toes. At sometime she had worked on a fairground and died in the 1960s.

The photo shows Dorothy has having small very stunted (not more that 6”) forearms with hands.

Nicola, the one that lost the 2 brothers. Glad she won it.

Wasn't keen on the other 2. BUT, I did want the little welsh one to win.... she was funny.
