John Oswald Hindle

I am searching for birth information for John Oswald Hindle, born December 3, 1872 in Accrington. I have his father's full name - Thomas Hindle, but I have only his mother's first name - Elizabeth. I do have the 1881 census and the 1891 census, but would like to know the mother's maiden name. Any suggestions?

Re: John Oswald Hindle

According to the British Vital Records Index volume 2 there may be another related family unit.....

Marriage details :-
HINDLE, Thomas Age: 30
Wife: Ellen CROSSLEY Age: 23
Marriage Date: 8 Dec 1864 Recorded in: Accrington, Lancashire, England
Husband's Father: James HINDLE
Wife's Father: Benjamin CROSSLEY

HINDLE, Charles Frederick Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 15 Aug 1870
Christening Date: 17 Aug 1870 Recorded in: Accrington, Lancashire, England
Father: Thomas HINDLE
Mother: Ellen

Of course this could be a red herring... but it was the closest match.
I had a quick search of 1871 but didn't find any quick results.

I would recommend that you obtain the birth certificate for 100% certainty

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Hi Weary Tourist,

Are there many sites which are free for finding out information about one's ancestors? You seem to be very much in the know. I would like to find out about my paternal grandparents and their siblings but I'm not prepared to spend any money doing it. I know I'm tight, I'm an accountant! They lived much of their lives in Accrington but originated from Blackburn I believe. It's a damn shame, we never seem to think to ask about these things whilst people are still with us.

Re: John Oswald Hindle

There are a few sites that are free, but you can never stray too far from paying for this information. It just isn't possible to use just one source, and extract all the information you require.

A good starting point is the 1881 Census at the Latter Day Saints.
(Same place as IGI in post above)

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Hi ho,

I am looking into my family at this time, I started just before signing up to accyweb and I have to say how helpful some of you people have been…

Atarah, Mick, Tealelf and Andrew Jackson from the Pals site have been brilliant in the way that they have offered their support. These are real Accy people and have my gratitude.

Many others have given their time and shown genuine interest in someone they have never met. Good blood and a real accy dry sense of humour these people thanks to you all. I know who you are and that is all that matters to me.

However, back to the point. In a week its cost me £35 to get all the dates of births Marriages and deaths of 3 generations of the Douglas’s in Accrington and Blackburn. All but for my great, great grandfather and I hope to have those soon…and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Oh, Hindle is a name I remember form my past...give us a clue.

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Here are distribution maps for the surname Hindle based on where they were living on 1881 Census return. Hope it helps in your research.

I have seen somewhere else someone mention about difficulties uploading images and excedding a maximum size.

For the record the images here were 27Kb and 37Kb. When they were uploaded they were reported as being 262Kb and 369Kb. Hope this helps
Attached Images
File Type: jpg hindle1.jpg (26.2 KB, 57 views)
File Type: jpg hindle2.JPG (36.9 KB, 69 views)

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Another free site for Birth, Death, and Marriage Civil Registration Index is here :-
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

The index entries are generally filed in quarters, so :-
Quarter 1 March - Covers registrations made Jan-Mar
Quarter 2 June - Covers registrations made Apr-June
Quarter 3 Sept - Covers registrations made July-Sept
Quarter 4 Dec - Covers registrations made Oct-Dec

You should be aware of the potential lag whereby, from memory, the informant had up to six weeks to register the event. So someone born 20th March 1860 could appear in Q2 Jun 1860 Index and not Q1 Mar 1860.

Anyway good news is that both Charles Frederick Hindle and John Oswald Hindle appear on the FreeBMD list.

John Oswald Hindle's birth is given as 1871, and not 1872.
I will double check it's not a transcription error against original Index held at Family Record Office on my next visit.
(FRC info here http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/default.htm)

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Thank you very much for your interest in my quest. I do have copies of John's and Charles' Petition for Naturalization in the U.S. John listed his birth date as 12/3/1872, while Charles is 11/18/1875.

I am curious why Elizabeth Ann came to the U.S. 5 months before her brothers did. I am wondering if their father, Thomas passed away after the 1891 census. He is listed as being 65 in 1891, living with his children and a servant.

Thanks again for your help

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Following a visit to the Family Record Centre at lunchtime today, to consult the original indexes, I can confirm the following entries

Index Qtr Year/Entry/Registration District ref
==============/=====/=========================
Dec 1871/John Oswald Hindle/Haslingden 8e 170
Dec 1875/Charles Frederick Hindle/Haslingden 8e 186

My observations of 1881 Census
==============================
I suspect that Thomas married twice due to age difference between Thomas and his wife, and also difference between 1st and 2nd child shown on return.

I would recommend that you purchase birth certificate for John Oswald Hindle circa £7 rather than go after certificate for Elizabeth Anne.

Hope that helps

Re: John Oswald Hindle

I am going to fax GRO tonight requesting Charles Frederick's certificate.

Any suggestions for finding cemetary records in Accrington for Elizabeth Ann Hindle, born circa 1838 in Accrington, or Thomas Hindle, b. 1826 in Salford?

Thank you all for your help!

Re: John Oswald Hindle

She would not have been born as Elizabeth Hindle. The big missing link in my search is her maiden name. She married Thomas Hindle. I am hoping that the birth certificate of one of her sons will reveal her maiden name.

Thanks so much for your interest!

Re: John Oswald Hindle

Post back when you get the maiden name, also the address as it may be possible to find the Hindle's on 1871 Census and more help may be available.
