My HINDLE family
My mother, Janet, was a Hindle. Her father was George, a bricklayer./mason who achieved some notoriety because he threatened to blow Ossie councillors up with a grenade in 1923. He came from a big family fathered by Joseph. They lived in Water Strteet. His siblings were: Lucinda,Wm Enos, Alfred,Arthur,Mary Jane,Martha, Jane,Fred, Walter & Joseph. This father, Joseph died in 1924 whilst living in Lee St. In his will he stipulated that whichever of his children bid the highest amount, payable to his second wife, could have his prized grandfather clock.
Family lore has it that one of the lads stated that if this did happen, he would break up the clopck before anyone could take it and in consequence, it was not bid at. Perhaps the family did not like their step mother.
Another tale is that this same Joseph was working as a mason on the building of Peel Park School in 1910 when some hot lead went in his eye, and as a result he had a false eye which he used to take out every Sunday dinnertime to clean with his fork.
Anyone linked to this family? Heard these stories before?
