I was friendly with a boy, who lived near me in West End, who was there at that time. His name was Robert Greenwood. I haven't seen him for nearly 50 years.

Re: woodnook secondary modern 1953-57

I think it strange that a Westend lad should attend Woodnook when Rhyddings was much nearer. However, if you do make contact with Robert Greenwood, I feel sure that he will be the same lad who lived in Percy st (Osw) with whom I was matey when his family lived in Orange St and were somehow friendly with my grandma, with whom I lived in Dowry st. His mum had two Polish lodgers and one was called Marian, which i thought very funny for a bloke. . Haven't thought about him for years. Maybe he went to woodnook because he had gone there when he lived in Orange St and didn't like changing schools.

Did you know David Harker and Keith Thornley from West End?

I don't know why Robert went there but, yes, he lived on Percy St. in West End. He was, I seem to remember, a very good swimmer.

Keith Thornley lived next door to my great-aunt, Jane Sleddon, on Norman Rd. and she used to child-mind him when he was a little boy along with my cousin, Shirley Sleddon, who was the same age as him (about 7 years older than me). I remember his mother died (brain tumour?) when he was quite young. I don't remember David Harker, though the name Harker does ring bells.

David Harker was a good friend on mine...his dad Willie Harker played for Burnley and Stanley and was the landlord of the Hare and Hounds.

That's probably why I know the name. The landlord I remember best was Peter MacDonald, in the mid 40s, who was a good friend of my dad. When was Willie Harker landlord?

Did his mother have a bakers shop on Henry Street, Church and did he have a younger brother named Spencer? if so then he was old mate of mine in the 1960s.

Still going and living in Doncaster I believe, Yours Taddy.
