Accrington Observers

I am aware of some Observers (1984-2005) Midweek Obervers (1974-91) , Hyndburn Expresses(1994-98) and Gt Harwood newspapers (1990--91) being sold. PM me your email address for details. They are bound in complete years, though some are only part of the year.

Keep your eye open for Accrington Gazette 1915 to 1919, they don't have originals of those at the library, only on micro film.
I need to photograph some of the originals for my files.

Re: Accrington Observers

That's a tall order Retlaw. Be assured that if I come across any- you'll be the first to know.
If county library HQ, Preston or the Colindale Newspaper library have hard copies, they might be willing to send them to Acc for you to work on using your patented camera-holding device. If not, I might be able to find you somebody to go in and do the photographing for you.

There are no hard copies at County HQ, if there had of been I would have done them by now, Accy Library got all the local newspapers for me from the County HQ some years back, Blackburn Library lent me the Blackburn Times, 1914-1918, & I did Burnley & Chorley for 1916.
Never heard of Colindale Library, where do they hang out.

It's in London, part of the British Library. Used to be the National Newspaper Library.

Just had a look at the site, but its no use, can't travel that far any more, and it looks like they wouldn't lend them either.

Re: Accrington Observers

Retlaw. If they have got what you want, try two things:
a) Speak with John in the library and ask him to liase with the library manager and the local community heritage manager -Fiona might be her name, or even Julie Creer, the one at county hall, with a view to getting Colindale to make a special case for the Accrington Pals and sending the originals up for photographing. It may be that you will have to give copies to the library

b) if the above fails, then I will use my contacts in the Family History Society to see if I can find somebody to do the search & photographing for you. That too might mean copies for the library.

If this comes off, there's got to be a pint in it for me. -Getting Retlaw to buy me a pint would be the pinnacle of success.

Re: Accrington Observers

Ive had a reminder from Mick for which I am grateful. I own these Observers. The library don't want them. They are in Good condition and priced between £20 and £45 each. Free delivery in Accrington area. The Gt Harwood ones are the Advertiser, an off-shoot of the Observer.

Don't think it will ever come off, I doubt that Colindale would allow their copies out of the place, then think of the costs if they did, insurance alone would be a heck of a lot, then weigh in transporting them up to here.
I don't photograph the full pages, just the articles relateing to WW1, thats why I made the stand for the camera to sit square on, at the right focus for best results.
When Blackburn Libray lent me their papers, I gave them all I did on a DVD, but I bet they've lost it by now, they don't seem to place as much importance on local studies like Accy does.
As for buying you a pint, I don't frequent pubs and such, would battery acid do, itull keep thee fully charged.

Had a word with Kath in the Library, she doesn't think Colindale will let them out of their builfing either, and if they did the Library could'nt afford the costs of insurance & transport, she also says that Colindale are having the newspapers digitise, but when they get round to Accy, only god will know, they've done up to about 1900, Its not Ancestry thats doing it, thank goodness, but it will be on a pay per view site.
Kath told me some one has hard copies of the Haz Gaz, so I'll try that route and see if they contain what I'm after.
