Stick it in your car if it is the right grade (10W-40), the fact that it is diesel oil only means it has more detergents in it. It should be fine, what car have you got? I always use the same diesel oil I buy for my car in our petrol Corsa as well.

I would be surprised if a new car used 10W-40. Check what grade you need and by the correct grade and spec. Grade and spec is more important than make IMHO.

I wouldn't put diesel engine oil in a petrol car if I was you. Unless you do it from new.
The detergents in the diesel engine oil, clean the inside of the engine stopping carbon build up. Petrol engines don't have the same carbon problems, but still get very dirty on the inside. Putting diesel engine oil into a petrol engine, will result in all the dirt being cleaned eventually turning into a thick mush, and blocking all the oil ways. You can guess what will happen next.

If you do put diesel engine oil into your petrol engine, I would recommend you change the oil and filter every couple of weeks, or couple of hundred miles for about four or five changes.

I also recommend if you buy a diesel car without a service history, you change the oil regulary with the above method, because putting petrol engine oil in a diesel engine is a popular pastime with many owners and friends of owners, because it's cheaper and won't give you any problems for a good few thousand miles.
