Ha!! got one!

Thanks for all constructive help though!

Someone off Accyweb was in my hubby's local, went up to hubby and said she had a deck chair which I could have. She delivered it to my house at teatime!

Nice one!

Anyway, since Atarah got her much wanted deck chair it has teemed it down......so I reckon she hasn't been able to sit out in it........all next week looks a bit bleak too.
Well, Friday was St Swithins day....and it did rain.

Re: Old fashioned stripey deck chair

Oh no, was it actually on St Swithins day when I said I wanted my stripey deckchair! - "St Swithins day if it dost rain, for 40 days 'twill remain. St Swithins day if thou be fair, for 40 days 'twill rain nae more."

Who was St. Swithin?
St. Swithin (or more properly, Swithun) was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester. He was born in the kingdom of Wessex and educated in its capital, Winchester. He was famous for charitable gifts and building churches.

Why do people watch the weather on St. Swithin's day?
A legend says that as the Bishop lay on his deathbed, he asked to be buried out of doors, where he would be trodden on and rained on. For nine years, his wishes were followed, but then, the monks of Winchester attempted to remove his remains to a splendid shrine inside the cathedral on 15 July 971. According to legend there was a heavy rain storm either during the ceremony or on its anniversary.

This led to the old wives' tale (folklore) that if it rains on St Swithin's Day (July 15th), it will rain for the next 40 days in succession, and a fine 15th July will be followed by 40 days of fine weather. However, according to the Met Office, this old wives' tale is nothing other than a myth. It has been put to the test on 55 occasions*, when it has been wet on St Swithin's Day and 40 days of rain did not follow.

Re: Old fashioned stripey deck chair

where are you Atarah....Port Said?
It has done very little here in Clayton but teem it down. I'm talking rain in stair rods...not that gentle stuff.
The cat has just come in looking like someone has tried to drown him.......I have just had to stop him heading off upstairs to go and sleep on our bed.
He was not impressed at being towelled down.

And the forecast for next week is not looking too promising either.(just as the children break up from school)

Oh, yes and St Swithin(Swithun)........I'm pretty sure that his skeleton was broken up......his skull went to Canterbury Cathedral, and one of the bones from his arm went to Peterborough I believe. It was believed that the bones of a saint had special powers.
(not sure where the rest of him is placed)

Re: Old fashioned stripey deck chair

Atara, you wanted an 'old fashioned stripey deck chair'! That's not one! It's a plastic cover and it looks quite clean.
It should be dirty canvas, covered in suncream, sweat and Brylcream! It's a wonder we didn't all catch something! Perhaps we did.
That's 25 posts, Bob. Are we all short of something to do, like get a life? Or is it just a wet Sunday?

As the man said 25, but the subject matter has subtly shifted from stripey deck chairs to weather & you do know how the Brits are about their weather ! Expect quite a few more entries.

Re: Old fashioned stripey deck chair

If Ararah needs an 'old fashioned stipey deckchair' she must be expecting some deckchair weather!
So we're still on thread, Dave.
