I don't know - a lot of people think that he was instrumental in creating the conditions that caused the crisis.

Beni's Advice To Bankers;

Mortgages - only lend 80% of the property value.
Loans - only lend 80% 0f the security.
Unsecured loans - point client in the direction of the USA.

Forgot to add.

Pay bonuses on loans that are repaid and not loans that are sold (any idiot can lend money to another idiot).

In other words, lend only to those who will most probably repay the loan ... that's the way it's done here.

I recall when I applied for my first mortgage in 1961.
Then you had to have at least 20% in savings in the building society that you were asking, and you had an interview to judge your ability to repay. It looks like those days have returned, but that may well be a good thing in the long run - default and repossessions were very rare happenings.

Also -It wasn't possible to have another mortgage for a house to let out or use as a holiday home.

Its just crazy now Margaret you can get Mortgage based on four or five times your salary now a recipe for disaster, in our day if the husbands wage didn't;t cover the mortgage out didn't get it as the wife's earning weren't taken into account
