65 Anniversary of the Dam Busters Raid

today is the 65th anniversary of the 617 Squadrons raid on the Ruhr dams in Germany, one of the most heroic and dangerous raid ever undertaken by the RAF. The Leader of this raid was wing commander Guy Gibson, 53 aircrew were killed in the opperation

There are a couple that come to mind: Above Us the Waves and The Cockleshell Heroes .... Battle of the River Plate, maybe. In a more general sense, and even tho' it is fiction: The Cruel Sea.

I remember that in the late fifties at one of the Accy Grammar speech days, the visiting speaker was Group Captain Leonard Chesire VC ... a real hero, and such an unassuming, soft spoken, gentle man.

I read somewhere the other day .... damn memory, it's the second thing to go and viagara doesn't help ... that they are going to do a remake of the Dam Busters, written by Stephen Fry and directed by Peter Jackson. Should be a good show with 21st century special effects.

I wonder if, in these politically correct times, whether there will be a place in the movie for Guy Gibson's dog

There is no way a remake of the film would use the real name of the dog.

Can you imagine how many would jump on the “that name offends me” bandwagon.

There is a very interesting museum to 617 Squadron in the tower of Derwen Reservoir in Derbyshire, open Sundays and Bank Holidays

This is the history of a VC and a great hero of the UK and he had a dog which was called 'Nigger'.............Fact.

Nigger the labrador was killed (knocked over by a car) 65 years ago today while Guy Gibson was bombing the Ruhr Dams.

Probably most of Britain first became aware of the dam buster raids when the film was made in 1955. I remember going to see it at the Palladium and falling deeply in love with Richard Todd, who played Gibson - well, I was only 12 at the time. It left me with a serious appreciation of what an air force blue uniform can do for a man - I married an airman 7 years later - and an ability to instantly recognise the Lancaster bomber, one of only about 4 planes I can identify on sight.

Seriously, though, we owe so much to those men and to all the thousands of others who contributed, one way or another, to defeating the Nazis. Bless 'em all.

The only surviving pilot who was involved in these raids was on the news tonight, we do owe a lot to these men for their bravery.

This is my 1000th post on Accyweb and I would like to dedicate it to my father Ernest Higginson........Killed Burma 1944 and to my uncle my father's brother who gave his life in Libya in 1942...Harold Higginson.
Both are given recognition on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website.
