I can understand the whole regeneration point they're making but surely they should be able to do this cheaper

End of the day the rest of the country could do with regeneration too so i dont see why non-londoners should pay for this

i was very pro-2012 but at this cost?

A fair amount of this money is for VAT, when they formulated the estimates they did not take this into account, therefore the overestimation is grossly overstated as the money raised will go back to the govenment/tax payers who along with the special lottery paid for by the people, are always the loosers. The only winners are the city of London who will inherit the stadiums etc that are being built, and they are the ones griping about paying for it.

How much will it bring in in tourism? Bet its nowhere near that much.

Just a pity they cant make errors in their sums like this for the NHS.

As for the Olympics I believe it was and is an ego trip for the Pres and his cronnies. Its sad that we as taxpayers are to suffer for this, occassin as it might end up as one hell of a folly.

u know what else angers me

when manchester was going for the bid and when manchester was hosting the commonwealth games u never ever saw money shortage/miscalculation from them and u didnt see the govt willing to bank roll that event

and its thanks to the success on the back of manchester that london pitted its bid

Generally speaking I was pleased that London won the opportunity to stage the games. Having bailed out the IOC in 1948 it was about time that a city in the UK was given a proper chance to show what it could do.

It always used to be the case that the host city bore the cost of staging the games.

Since London is to be the host city for the 2012 games and since London is going to benefit most from increased tourism, regeneration and the legacy of stadia and other world class sporting facilities I think that it is only fair that Londoners should foot the bill.

I do not think that the organisation of the games should be any concern of central government. And I do not think that funding should be provided by the taxpaying public of the entire UK or that the National Lottery should be required to provide funding, except for offering special draws where the general public can decided whether to participate or not and where the funding can be routed directly to the organisers.
