As well as the coronation, it also piddled down for the Silver Jubilee.

Perhaps plucking June, as the pinnacle of these celebrations wasn't such a hot idea.

Febuary 8th this year, the actual date of her Diamond Jubilee, admittedly cooler than today, was otherwise wall-to-wall sunshine.

Not a rain cloud in sight.

Long may she rain over us...in damp, and dreary June.

Wrong.

She was actually only proclaimed Queen on February 6th, on the death of her father, the King.

She didn't formally sign the Accession Declaration, and accede to the throne as Queen until two days later.

February the eighth.

I can see why you don't particularly care when the celebration is.

Any old date will do.

Was nothing.

It actually lashed down.

Going into the time machine, to falsify the weather forecast was a bit tiresome.

Thanks ever so much for your application for the position of court jester.

Unfortunately you haven't been successful on this occasion, and won't be asked back to attend the interview selections.

Good luck.

I hope in the future you find something that you do have more of a natural talent for.

Accession takes place at the moment of death of the preceding sovereign. In the Queen's case, 6 Feb. The Queen arrived back from Kenya on 7 Feb, and the following day took the accession oath and was proclaimed on that day.

You're right, any old date will do.

No, despite your Wiki misinformation, she was only proclaimed Queen on February the 6th.

Accession formally occurred two days later, on the 8th.

Which therefore makes February the 8th this year, the 60th anniversary of her accession.

Anyway she's in town now for the racing.

She's still celebrating Christmas at Sandringham in February, and any later in the summer and she'll be off up to Balmoral for a couple of months.

This has just squeezed in nicely, between the Derby, and Ascot.

Back to this weekend's celebrations.

I bet she's really looking forward to Jessie J tonight.

Even though she's more of a gangsta rap fan herself.

Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?

So the real reason, as to why jubilees are celebrated in June, rather than February, is that it fits in nicely with her calendar, and doesn't cause her too much upheaval.

The peasants get their damp butties, and bunting.

She gets to fit them in, inbetween watching the gee-gees, without it causing too much of a bother to one's self.

A perk of being the monarch, I suppose.

Rearranging the calendar.

At least she hasn't tried to halt the tides.

Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?

It is not Wiki misinformation it is from the official diamond jubilee website

The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI.

http://www.thediamondjubilee.org/accession

Proclamation of her accession was 6 Feb was recorded in the London Gazette. The Accession Council took place on 8 Feb followed by formal proclamation read out in various places - I am old enough to remember this happening.

It still doesn't alter the fact that her accession happened on 6 Feb on the death of her father.

Maybe all this is a rehearsal for June next year when it will be the 60th anniversary of her coronation.

Her accession offically, and formally happened on the eighth of February.

That's a historical fact.

Happily we're all agreed that the actual anniversary of this event happened in February, and has nothing at all to do with June.

As to the date, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Though history agrees with me.

I don't think there's anything planned.

Nothing much happened in the years following her other jubilee celebrations, in 1978, or 2003.
