A Lion without a roar
Did you read in the Lancs Eve Tel today about the president of the Lions who has resigned because they've now voted to admit women into the club.
http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk/la.../NEWSACC2.html
He said that he was quitting because admitting women meant they all had to be a bit more respectable.

Re: A Lion without a roar
Talking of sex discrimination I noticed an advert on tv tonight for 'Sheila's Wheels', a car insurance company for women only. Is this fair, and should it not be illegal to discriminate against men?

Re: A Lion without a roar
The advert was pants by the way Sheila.
Three dimbos in the back of a Cadillac, dressed as the poorer sisters of the Pink Ladies from Grease, and looking like it was filmed in a lock-up in Pontefract, didn't work for me.

Re: A Lion without a roar
Its only seems to be sexist if the women are on the receiving end (alledgedly).

Re: A Lion without a roar
I can see me getting a bit unstuck on the subject of sexism because I organise events to celebrate International Women's Day which on the surface does appear to exclude men. However, in my defense - we have never, ever excluded men and we're quite happy for men to come along to any of the events - the VE/VJ event was an even mix of men and women attending and helping out.
Also, International Women's Day is a recognised event up and down the country and is recognised by the United Nations - it's also a public holiday in some countries.
The thing is that I would totally support any International Men's Day - I happen to think that the most discriminated against section of the population is straight, white, married men.

Re: A Lion without a roar
Well hopefully I will soon no longer be part of the most discriminated section of society Gayle. I deplore discrimination of any form and the labeling that goes with it.

Re: A Lion without a roar
As do I Spuggie, I also think that so called 'positive' discrimination is as bad as real discrimination.
I think the guy from the Lions is silly to be so het up about women joining. I wouldn't get that bothered about him joining Hyndburn Women's Forum, in fact, now that he's going to have some time on his hands perhaps I should ask him if he can spare us a bit of it! lol

Re: A Lion without a roar
Women have the right to be members of any club they want. Imagine if men were not allowed into anne summers for a gift for the love of their life there would be uproar.

agree spug but what interests me at the moment as regards discrimination is the GOLF one, women are now to be allowed to qualify for the british open- fine for me if they are good enough no problem! but a french golfer by the name of john vander velde has said ok if women can enter what has always been a male only competition then i want to enter the womens open! it may seem silly but to me theirs an important point raised here, the guy has been getting a bit of stick for this, i would just like to ask WHY? whats the differance?

Re: A Lion without a roar
I have to say I agree with cashman. I admire the bloke for standing by his principles but hey this is the 21st century. I race radio controlled cars which is a male dominated sport & some men do they're utmost to stop me beating them, even when they are a lap down which I find sad. When I race at nationals against men who don't know me & who try to upset me with chauvenistic comments pre-race, they are surprised when I don't retaliate verbally but make sure they know I have been in their race. I have earned the respect of those who race me & I dont expect any special treatment because I'm female. I except I am one of 'the boys' when I'm racing but off track I'm me

Re: A Lion without a roar
The guy has the ability to drive a ball further than most women so he would have to be given a handicap rating to allow him to play. Unfortunately this to is discrimination and even with the womens tee placed as per a standard coures they would still be disadvantaged. Its a rock and a hard place quandry this.

it is a rock and a hard place spug, but some guys can drive the ball 50-80 yds more than some of their rivals,do these guys ask for the big hitters to be handicapped? its a pre-requisite of the tournament that you qualify on ability! so on that basis i can't see why the guy should be handicapped when playing a lady, surely when you qualify on skill it has to be a level playing field for all,one of the biggest hitters in golf john daly comes unstuck with his short game on many occasions.

Re: A Lion without a roar
How strange. Back in the summer at the Accy Carnival the Lions had a tent and I was talking to them for quite a while and they were telling me about women being allowed to join and even encouraging me to think about it. It has obviously been on the cards for a while. Maybe he'd been hoping it would be overruled or something.
