Abolish House of Lords.

Another load of toss from unelected remainers, i have long thought this should be abolished, last week i signed a government based petition saying so.most of these people are just owd money grabbers and sooner kicked into touch the better, the fact the petition had oer 100.000 signatures means it must be discussed in the commons, be interesting to see what they come up with. not holding me breath.

It was remarked on my one of the Lords themselves that the House of Lords was the best 'aged care' in the country...of course it is. they get 300 quid a day for just clocking in...then they can burger off if they want to, but if they wasnt to stay and have a doze on the comfy benches they can do that and when lunchtime comes they can get a very good restaurant quality lunch subsidised by us mug...sorry taxpayers.

They are an expensive unelected load of tosspots. Most of them have been put there by political croneyism as a hedge agains the sitting government.
GET RID of them.
If a second house is felt to be necessary then let them be lected and make them earn their money...if they do not attend they get NOWT...if they attend but not for the whole session, then pay them pro rata.
Lastly make them pay the full cost of their grub( and that should apply to all MP's too).

As for Michael Heseltine....I would shoot that sneaky bar steward.(with pig muck)

I have just signed this petition.
This subject has come up before and most petitions get rejected.
For anyone else who wishes to add their name to this petition I will add a link.

If the petition reaches 100,000 the government have to debate it...this doesn't mean that they will act on what the petitioners are asking for.
In this case the government have said that it is not something that can be done during this parliament, but they have said they will look at the possibility of reducing the numbers of the lords. So you are very wise not to be holding your breath Cashy.
I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Yes, it must be the same one Cashy as it appears to be the only one that is currently active.it is currently running at almost a hundred and twenty thousand signatures.
So, we are not the only ones who think that these old duffers are a huge waste of money.

Re: Abolish House of Lords.

I signed the petition about a month back when the "swipes" were bumping their gums about the peasantry not knowing what they're doing. The only good thing about it is that the more they carry on, the more the public will be inclined to demand action about the pratts in the HOL, hence the politicoes will be panicking about their own future so may actually take some decisive action to quell any backlash.

Re: Abolish House of Lords.

Thanks for the Margaret. I have added my signature to the petition. I watched a programme last week about the Lords for curiosity and they were debating the housing bill and for the vote it was said there were 500 there so at £300 per member that's £150.000 and that was just one day. Some were said to get there by taxi and have it wait till they ran in and signed in and then left. Talk about daylight robbery. There are far too many of them. An elected upper house would be better and as you said Margaret they should only be paid for a full session or pro rata. £300 per day seems far too much I think considering how many other benefits they get. Getting rid of it altogether is hardly going to happen with a Tory government though. Still we can live in hope if we die in despair.

Re: Abolish House of Lords.

Pleasure to be of help Rowlf.
Parties of all persuasions have put forward members to be elevated to the House of Lords...and an outgoing government see it as some kind of 'hedge' against the policies of an incoming goverment(bills have to be put to the Lords before they can be ratified. If the Lords do not agree with something it goes back to the commons...but if MP's then sanction the bill it goes through...I think. If I am wrong I am pretty sure someone will put me right on this)... They are seen to be a kind of brake.

It would make far more sense to have elected representatives...and fewer of them.

Don't we have a problem, in that what is passed by the Commons goes to the Lords for their approval?

How many of them will vote to remove their perks?

Plus, where will the old M.P..'s go when they are no longer of any use?

I know where most of em should go now. Seems a new member who aint even posted or introduced herself has voted, seems very suspicious that to me.

Re: Abolish House of Lords.

The stupidest thing to do would be to abolish the H of L. It's cheap, it works, it's the least likely system to be corrupted, and it's members have the best education money can buy.
What do you imagine would be put in it's place if it was abolished?
An elected membership who are there in their own interests, like the ones in the H of C.
Or 800 people who applied for the job and were hired whether or not they were suitable for the job.
Or make a term in the H of L a periodic compulsory like the jury system.
If you think the House of Lords is expensive now - you ain't seen nothing yet.
Mrs Thatcher abolished MP's pay and made it an expenses only payment system - and the UK taxpayer paid £1645 for a duck house.
