Accrington - where is it ??
80% (approx) of the people I talk to below Warrington above Lancaster ask me where Accrington is. I reply in this robotic way:-
Answer: Between Blackburn and Burnley.
Blank expression and silence.
Answer: 15 miles east of Preston?
Blank expression and silence.
Now becoming an impatient answer: 30 Miles north of Manchester?
Oh right.
Apart from giving them map references, sure you lot can give me better directions as to where we are .. not exactly 3rd planet from the sun, is it ??

Re: Accrington - where is it ??
Funny you should say that. I have a copy of a Military Service Record dated 1805 that records the recruitment details of a “potential” ancestor that describes as him coming from the Parish of Blackburn, near the town of Manchester……

Re: Accrington - where is it ??
Don't worry. I once told someone I work with (in Warrington) that my parents now lived in Blackburn and was asked, "Is that in Yorkshire?"
Sheesh!

I love saying that I come from Oswaldtwistle - especially when people can't spell it, or in some cases, can't even say it if they're reading it from a screen.

Re: Accrington - where is it ??
Noting all these excellent suggestions .. wish to be polite though, oh well, it's 'how ya tell it' I suppose. Depends on inflections and suppose there is a nice way of saying, (coyly),"Well, where it has always been, darling" and (flirtatiously) "Don't you know your Geography" looking through eyelashes at the same time. Will go off now and rehearse.
Gayle, yes, love to tell them where I work too and relate the story of how Oswaldtwistle got it's name.

It's even better when they say Accrington wheres that? then you say near oswaldtwistle their eyes go blank and they drift onto a different subject.

Re: Accrington - where is it ??
Getting people from different areas to pronounce Oswaldtwistle when they are full of drink is more fun even better than doing the same with Ecchelfecan or Milngavie.
