Accy Vic

It's just been on the bbc local news that the minor injuries unit at AV will be closed from today until next Monday so that the staff can be moved to help out with a high demand at Blackburn & Burnley's A & E dept??
Couldn't believe my ears! What about if there's a demand in Accrington or some people needing help cannot get to the other hospitals - I know the hospitals are stretched for staff but am gobsmacked by this - the beginning of the end for our minor injuries unit which has already been scaled down?

Re: Accy Vic

Actually AccyMad Burnley does not have an A & E depot any more just an Urgent Care Unit. Anyone needing an ambulance is taken to Blackburn. It is absolutely ridiculous. How they expect Blackburn to cope with such a wide area is beyond me. Anyone who has a heart attack in Nelson or Burnley for that matter has far less chance of surviving the journey to Blackburn than they would have going to Burnley General. Sadly I think you fears for Accy Vic are right. It is very sad. I have fond memories of a lovely nurse known as Campie at Accy Vic in the 50s. I had to attend the A & E ever week for couple of months after falling on cinders on Alice Street running for the bus home from Peel Park. He was a super nurse.

Re: Accy Vic

Just read that the junior doctors are on a 48 hour strike so that most likely has some bearing on the situation.

Re: Accy Vic

Don't know why I was so shocked this morning, after all the services AV provide have been steadily reduced over the last few years but the thought of the ones we have got left being taken away even if temporarily really got my back up!

government will use thsi as an example of us surviving without it and reduce it further

it should never have been reduced the way it has been and should still be a fully functioning A&E

government spent millions expanding blackburn queens park hospital expecting it to cater for accy and surrounding areas then demolished the A&E at blackburn royal infirmary so you now have ONE A&E covering the entire area of blackburn and Darwen and all of hyndburn plus whatever has to come from burnley that isnt covered in burnley

also from what i gather you cant have a baby at blackburn any more as the baby ward kept having to be shut down

seems to me we had far less cover than ever even before the tory lot got in power

i dont think a labour or tory government gives a stuff about the NHS they are both as bad as each other and is merely something they use to batter each other with at election time

Re: Accy Vic

Burnley only has what you have at the Vic now. All A& E patients are taken to Blackburn. The fracture clinic has been moved to Blackburn too. No wonder they cannot cope. One A & E for Blackburn and district plus Accrington, Great Harwood, Clayton, Padiham, Hapton, all of Burnley and district, Brierfield, Nelson, Colne Barrowford. It does not need a rocket scientist to work out that even with the extra money spent on the Royal it is not capable of dealing with such a large area. The powers that be who run these health authorities are muppets.

Re: Accy Vic

you are forgetting Rossendale as well Rowlf ...

can I make a suggestion .. Rossendale has a minor injuries unit in Rawtenstall on Bacup road just past the bus station next door to the weavers cottage ... so if you can get there maybe use that instead of going to blackburns A&E ... blackburns a & e was busy there today
