Does that apply to Buckingham Palace as well?
Would you not have canvassed there too?

I suppose that makes me in your eyes a crypto-fascist?

Re: ACCYWEB Meeting Venue?
Ours will be flying at the caravan. Well maybe not flying. We can never manage to get the thing to flap! It just hangs there all limp and useless. We'll probably have the Welsh one 'flying' too.

Gerri Halliwell.
Daft popstar, or subversive right-wing propagandist?

Re: ACCYWEB Meeting Venue?
Hang on - what are you having a go at me for?
I don't like it but surely you can't deny that in the country at the moment the perception is that the BNP have hijacked the Union Jack and the St George Flag. Fine, show Geri Halliwell and the Queen as examples but are you honestly trying to tell me that if you saw one flying out side a house (when there wasn't a sporting event on) that you wouldn't for one second assume that a BNP supporter lived there.

From the famouse Vanity Fair Cool Britannia cover.
Read Adolf and Eva, instead of Liam and Patsy?

Which precisely illustrates what I mean. During a sporting 'moment' the flag comes out but immediately after we lose, which we invariably do, the flags come down.
Most people would not fly them out of sheer nationalism.

Equivalent. What's the equivalent ? They're either BNP supporters/members or they aren't. Did you go round canvassing on behalf of the Labour Party, or its equivalent ?

Re: ACCYWEB Meeting Venue?
If it really is the case that the BNP have hi-jacked our flags it's about time we ho-jacked them back again.

Re: ACCYWEB Meeting Venue?
Well I'm saddened and amazed that a Labour party candidate wouldn't, and didn't, canvas at a house which had a Union Jack displayed.
Did you never stop to think that in those houses were perhaps downtrodden women (or men), who didn't have a choice about their spouse/partner flying the countries flag, and whose vote you could perhaps have secured by actually talking to them?

I'm not having a go particularly at you. I said to Rosebud last night, earlier in the thread, that he's about thirty years out of date with his thinking that the Union Jack has been hijacked by the far right.
...and no, I wouldn't presume anything about a house which had a Union Jack flying outside. Just as I wouldn't presume that everyone who lived in a council house voted Labour, or that people living in a mansion voted Tory.

If you'd have said that whilst canvassing, you found that at each house you went to, with a Union Jack flying outside, the people told you that they intended to vote for the BNP, fair enough, that is evidence of a link.
But to say you didn't even go there in the first place to talk to them, I cannot understand, and it makes me quite angry that someone who was chosen by the Labour party to represent them in an important election, perhaps lost many votes because of preconceived prejudices.

garinda: "I thought you said you were voting Labour at the last election."
Gayle: "I most certainly did."
garinda: "Then why did you have a Vote Conservative poster in your window?"
Gayle: "Well, I didn't want to lower the tone of the neighbourhood, you know."
