Alabama sheriffs feed imates on 90 pence a day
Interesting story I came across for the "law and order" crowd amongst us , sheriffs in the State of Alabama have their budget for feeding prisioners set by the State at a rate of $1.75 (about 90p UK) a day per inmate, and if they dont spend that amount they pocket the change

didn't think it was possible to feed a dog on that amount but it seems to be working in Dixie , some folks are complaining , but no-one seems to be malnourished or suffering from loss of human rights
maybe a bit of an explaination of how the jail/prison system works here , each county in the US has a sheriff , much like each county in the UK used to have a Chief Constable , apart from being responsible for regular policing they also run the county jails (petty thieving, domestic abuse, drink/drug driving ,stuff sorted out by local magistrates courts) short term stays up to about two years) .Worse crimes are dealt with by the 'Superior' courts (Preston sesions/Lancaster assizes) and then sent to the state prisions (San Quinten, Sing Sing etc. long term, life , deathrow )
