Italian food might not be foreign muck to you......and it might be healthy....I just don't like it. I don't eat pasta if I can help it.......I don't much like it(reminds me of wet wallpaper) I don't eat olives.......mushrooms have to be fried to a crisp for me to eat them(again it is a texture thing). I like tomatoes raw and on a good salad.......I like tomato soup too. I don't folow recipe books, and to me, Jamie Oliver is over hyped.

We lived on spuds and veg when we were hard up.......vegetable broth and dumplings....baked bean casserole with a couple of strips of crispy bacon on the top for garnish.......chips on bread.

I still make my own soups from fresh ingredients, casseroles and stews.
We don't have much in the way of take aways.....a very occasional chippy tea(maybe once or twice in a year).

From an Aldi spokesman:

Used to love broth when i was little - made with a broth posy bought from the market including a sprig of thyme. Nowadays it's all chopped up but not seen it anywhere else in the country - a Lanky thing?

Just checked how many different types of pasta I have in:

Ziti, 2 sizes of spaghetti, tagliatelle, bucatini, trenette, pizzocheri (all "long" pasta)

Penette, mezze penne, fusilli, farfalle, sedani, tofarelle. (short pasta)

Orecchiette, Lasagne and Trofie (fresh pasta)

Ditaloni rigati and gramigna (pasta for soups/minestrone)

Each one has a different use/recipe and it's amazingly versatile stuff - but you do need to know how to cook it properly otherwise you get the "wall-paper" effect which Margaret P describes.

I also used to love broth -mum used to buy it on the outside market. It was best with ham shank in, pearl barley and of couse dumplings as you say Jay! Real winter food...

We still get broth posies.......but lots of folk by the chopped up stuff.
I like to do my own chopping.
As for the pasta being like wallpaper if cooked incorrectly.........al dente. is how they describe it when cooked properly.....I don't even like it like that either. It is a good job I live in Lancashire and not Italy. I would probably fade away to a shadow of myself.

My brother often does consultancy work in India and he visits that country twice or three times every year....I would definitely starve to death there.

You can use bacon ribs too...or you can do a vegetarian version which is just as good with dumplings(especially if you add just a little bit of sage and finely chopped fried onions to the dumpling dough).
