Allegiance to the Queen
Watching BBC Breakfast this morning, there was an item about Lord Goldsmith, the former Attorney General, is to recommend to the Prime Minister that on leaving school all children should swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen, to confirm their Britishness. My first thoughts on the matter was b******s, what do you think

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
I'm suprised this hasn't already been mentioned.
Coming from a long line of republicans, including a great uncle, Joe Aspinall, who as Chairman of Oswaldtwistle Urban Council, refused to stand for God Save the Queen, even at Buckingham Palace, and which echoes my own actions some years later, when asked to stand for Princess Michael of Kent at the Barbican Concert Hall, when I resolutely remained the only person seated, as H.R.H. took her seat directly in front of me.
If this silly piece of jingoism had been brought in when I was a child, I suspect I might have been sent off to a boarding school in France.

Full details of the proposal, for those who might have missed it.

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
It won't mean a thing to the children of today.
Being British isn't just about the Queen and the Royal family...being British is a mind set...not easy to instil if it isn't there to start with.

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
I am fed up with different members of the government coming up with these gimmicky ideas and expecting us to swallow them...and also expecting that they will make a difference to society.
I'm not impressed.

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
Yet another in a long line of gimmicks from the government. Brown's attempt to big up "Britishness" is a futile attempt to divert attention from the obvious injustices in the Union - free presciptions in Wales but not here, tuition charges for students here but not in Scotland etc etc, and the "West Lothian question" - the fact that Scottish MPs can vote in Westminster on matters which do not affect their constituents. Obviously, it's doomed to failure.

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
I wonder what would happen if the B.N.P. ever ran the country.
Would allegiance still be sworn, after the Royal family had been repatriated?

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
What a load of rubbish!
Most kids won't even give two hoots about the queen, how the hell does swearing an oath to the queen prove your Britishness anyway?
The royals are an outdated institution and personally would rather we didn't have them at all.

Unless you're a direct descendent of a druid, on both your paternal and maternal side, repatriation is inevitable.

Re: Allegiance to the Queen
What! More bollocks from Westminster….Mandy, I respect your right of free will but would suggest that refusing to stand for any head of state irrespective of your persuasion is just pure bad manners, an head of state represents the people and by snubbing them, your subbing us, but it’s your right.
I have sworn my Allegiance to the Queen (State) twice, as a CI for the MOD (Cadets) and for the British Army (Territorial). It was an obligation to the Queen (State) as was the obligation to lay down life. In this respect an oath of allegiance does and should stand.
I can understand young people of other nationalities being asked to swear an oath of allegiance particularly if that person takes up permanent residents or chooses to be become a British National. Obviously if the person wants to serve in the British Forces including the Civilian Services they should also swear.
what gets my goat is why any British born national should have to do it, irrespective of skin colour. In a country where flying a English Flag or being proud of being British in a white context is possibly offensive to Other Nationals then this is just another insult to the British public. What we need is a bloody coup d'état……
