allotments

i read a small article in the observer a few weeks ago about draining some of the heys field and making more plots to use.
so as ive been on the waiting list for 7 months or so i rang the council to see if they could shed some light onto the situation only to be told that they didnt know what i was talking about and that it could take years as im more or less at the bottom of the list.
anyone else on the waiting list? or any advice on how to get one while were soo keen anything can happen in 3 years and heres me thinking the council wants us to be green!

Re: allotments

Heys Playing Field is owned by County council and they have plans to improve it with better drainage and changing facilities for football.
There are many allotments nearby and a minibus delivers young men daily, who are working to clear some neglected plots and divide up some of the bigger ones up.
I suppose at the end of the summer the people at the top of the list may get offered one.
Your best chance of getting growing facilities is to offer to share one with someone who has one and finds it too much hard work for one person

I`m on the list for Huncoat and they are making more plots up there, not been the list long but was told there is about 14-15 people on it but by the time they have finished there will be more than that available.

Re: allotments

That might seem to indicate a long wait, but many are tenanted by 'older' men who get ill and give them up (or need the help of a young un like you)

The council are keen to see them used properly and will terminate the tenancy if a plot gets neglected (they do check)

The plots at Heys near me are allowed chickens ducks turkeys and geese- the dawn chorus here is spectacular - but the tenants have recently been told that they must grow stuff as well.

I had an allotment a while ago. I took over an overgrown and derelict plot. I spent ages getting it weeded etc. I had spuds, oniuons and carrots growing nicely. Then i had my bike accident and after two weks the council rang me to say they were taking it back as it wasnt being tended and they had a huge waiting list. It thyen wasn't touched for over 3 years!!

Re: allotments

Re: allotments

we used to go up the plots when we were little collecting eggs and such now we are all grown up and have a little girl it would be nice for her to go to the plots first hand. Learn all about were vegetables come from and looking after chickens, as well as something for the family to do.

Re: allotments

WELL IM GUTTED!!!!!!!!!!!
yesterday got some info on allotment week and what appears to be a form stating which plot preference i would like, so last night i had a good look around at the plots and got a list cause im not to picky of all the vacant plots saying to let. so all excited last night thinking of what we can do up there i took my wife and little girl up to have a look and they were all excited until i rang the council!!!!!!!

aparently the sheet stating which preference wasnt supposed to be in there and im still on the waiting list at the back sorry for ranting on just gutted thats all.
the man i spoke to was very nice and he said the plots that said they were to let are out of date! just when i was getting my hopes up i feel let down.

Crime on allotments

During the past week several Heys allotments have been broken into.
A caravan has been vandalised and condoms were left at the scene.
Trivial things, such as a box of biscuits, were stolen, but expensive items such as strimmers were not taken.
This indicates young persons in Ossy out of control - again.
I am pleased to report that the police are taking the matter seriously and a forensic team has visited the scenes.

So if you have an allotment that has been illegally entered, it would be productive to report it, so that the police can be aware of the whole problem.

Vehicles have been seen on the allotment tracks in the early hours of the morning, and 'joyride tracks' have damaged the surface of the playing field nearby.
So these vandals may well be in their late teens.
