An Eden Project in Lancashire?
Just seen on the news the proposal to create a "Lancashire Rain Forest" in smilar fashion to the Eden Project.
It has been suggested for Liverpool or Blackpool. What about Hyndburn? That would beat any (ahem) panopticon hands down and we've already got our little oasis round the River Stink to kick it off.
What do you reckon our chances are?

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
I sure finding a few neanderthals to work there wouldn't be a problem

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
It may not be the same story, appologies, but this week I read in the LET that someone wanted to open something called 'Spice World' in Blackburn. It was being billed by the promoters as being the 'northern Eden Project', but the council had turned it down.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
Not a bad idea that. Question is would the local authorities go for it? To me it would be a nice little tourist attraction.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
Blackpool is flat, windy and pointless. An Eden Project for the north is a fantastic idea and I think East Lancashire would be a perfect location. If HBC want to see Accrington prosper again then this is something worth bidding for.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
Yes it could be an interesting project and lets face it, "Lancashire Rain Forest", is exactly what it would be with our local climate.
I just hope that the type of visitors we attract don't just take advantage of the local Garden Centres to buy a spade as they head for the more remote spots of the forest to bury their mistakes!

Oh yes indeedy, on the site of the old Huncoat power station. That was supposed to bring jobs and great prosperity to the area. What have we got there now? A derelict site still.

Yes, and I think Tealeaf started a thread saying a proposed racecourse to go there, another none runner.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
'Spice' project tried to find a site in East Lancashire and they looked at a couple of sites in Hyndburn, Burnley and Blackburn. They were putting together a £20m lottery bid to finance it and they had to have a fixed site to put the bid in.
Hyndburn said they had no room for it, Burnley wasn't ready to start work on the rest of the surrounding area around the site they wanted and Blackburn offered them a site - no surprise that the bid was being prepared with a Blackburn site in mind then. On the eleventh hour the Councillors in Blackburn changed their minds and told the project managers that they wouldn't be allowing them to use that site. The project managers put the bid in to the lottery anyway but of course they didn't get the funding because they didn't have a site.
The article the other day was a bit of a non-article i.e. we haven't given up hope but we haven't got a site or money so nothing's happening at the moment!
As for the racecourse - from what I understand that involves joint working between Hyndburn and Ribble Valley at the moment - nuff said!

Our chances are slim - all the opportunities seem to be heading the way of Liverpool (2008 capital of culture) and Blackpool (contender for the mega casino) at the moment. Hyndburn won't get a look in. Plus, see my other post and we probably wouldn't be able to find any space for it anyway.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
It reminds me of someone I used to work with who wandered up and down all day chewing a pencil and looking thoughtful. If anybody asked him What he was doing he would just say "Many, many things too numerous to mention." But at the end of the day nobody could actually identify anything he'd done.

Re: An Eden Project in Lancashire?
For anyone who's interested here is a discussion we've already had about the race course
http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ght=racecourse
I can't find any links to any discussions about the Spice project. Sure we must have spoken about it before but can't remember.
