Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
What a load of rubbish, freedom of speech is a lost cause unless you are saying what the pc brigade want to hear. This in my opinion will cause a greater amount of racial tension.

Chav......do you mean Abu Hamza......?
I thought he was on house arrest. This is the guy that got a brand new people mover vehicle courtesy of the British tax payer.
Would it be illegal for me to call him a sponger?

Only by the do-gooders who think that openly celebrating it causes offence to other religions. Come to think of it, maybe that would be covered by the bill in that case! Of course in reality the people who are supposedly offended don't have any problem with it at all. It's like removing the Gideon's Bibles etc. Why can't we still have them and have the other options as well?

I can't speak for the Jehovah's Witnesses but I'm a Mormon (or to give us the proper name - a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and have been a missionary so know how they ought to behave. It is preferred for them to approach people who actually express an interest in knowing about the chuch and they'd much rather do that than go from door to door but when they have no actual "referrals" they do call on people unannounced. If you politely tell them that you aren't interested and ask them to leave then that is exactly what they should do. The young missionaries (lads of 19 -21 and young women a little older) do 2 years voluntary missionary service, usually something they have saved up to fund throughout their childhood. Older couples who are retired do serve as missionaries too but they usually work within the church organisation in temples or something. None of them should ever make nuisances of themselves and if they do it is very much frowned upon. Having said that I do know that some can be over-keen and so enthusiastic that they can't understand why people don't want to hear what they've got to say.
Years ago I had some Jehovah's Witnesses call here and I invited them in to discuss what they wanted to talk about. One of them actually ended up leaving here with a copy of the Book of Mormon - maybe that's why I haven't seen them since.
A JW friend of mine once invited me round to their church, possibly thinking that I wouldn't go but I did because I'm a curious sort of person and I found it quite fascinating. It's interesting to learn about different things even if we don't totally agree with them.
It will be a great shame if this bill frightens people off from each other or from discussing each other's religions for fear of breaking the law if we express disagreement. I can disagree with what people believe in but still respect their choice to believe it.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
[QUOTE=Roy]No, do you have a link top it somewhere? How will this affect things like internet message boards?
I think it will impede on the right to self expression and undoubtedly result in a modification in how we all address these issues. I would think that the Moderators will need to be a more politically motivated in ensuring that members don’t bring the site into disrepute, I think the bill would require us to do a little house cleaning in respect of what we may have previously written in regard to this matter.
I am not suggesting that we should wipe out any trace of racial, cultural or religious discussion on the site, but for the sake of common sense we should take steps to ensure that the site and ourselves are protected from those pillocks who will be looking in all the nooks and crannies for someone or something to have a go at. In the mean time I look forward for the first Christian Challenge under the Bill and how the Government responds.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Interesting. I wonder how this will affect political discussion in Northern Ireland?

I thought this site was hosted in the US and the owner is in Russia. How can UK laws affect AccyWeb?

I personally find anyone knocking on my door that I don't know to be a nuisance. It does not matter if they are selling double glazing or are members of some religious sect or another, they are a nuisance.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
It seems that slowly but surely the powers that be are eroding our freedoms. Will there come a time when a group of more than 3 people meeting is seen as a conspiracy???? If so, our Accyweb meetings will have to stop
Seriously though, there is a big difference between saying to someone "I don't agree with certain aspects of your religion." and inciting religious hatred. It will be interesting to see just where the law will draw the line.

It wont affect me or the site, but it could affect the UK users of accyweb... Us expats will be able to say what we like and the rest of you will have to keep stum incase the informers go and tell the KGB, sorry, UK police force.. It looks like thats the way the UK government want to go....

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
I can, and will, continue to call it as I see it.
How do the Though Police & Mind Controllers know where we are anyway?
Looking at your profile, Royski, you are in Moscow out of arms reach. Looking at my profile, I too am overseas. Not a lot they can do then, is there.
