Re: another shop closing?

Our shops seem to be closing down but the house prices seem to be exploding - it seems all wrong somehow, but are other towns the same?

Most of the shops discussed are national shops so it will be the same where those shops are based.

B&M bought the Glyn Webb chain. Dont know if the Accrington store will be one of those though. B&M are a bit like a Wilkinsons type shop. Mainly around the Blackpool areas.

The new town name at this rate will be Tackyrington. The council was happy to take the cash for the old market but has nothing really to bring and keep new shops.

SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!

Welcome to Tackyrington the town with the most cheapest of cheap shops available.

Not a nice thought is it.

It may be that these are the only shops in town that can afford the painfull overheads inflicted on them What you have to realise is, are there enough customers to support these businesses that are shutting down, as for keep knocking the pound shops, I personally have found them great value for money, what difference does it make how little they charge, as there are some real bargains to be had, there are no prizes for being overcharged except an inflated vanity.

We at Music Zone were trading up on last year's figures and always busy;other stores in the chain with more competition weren't doing as well and the financiers panicked. Let's hope we are as well supported when we reopen!

isn't that 4 shops in the presitgous shopping centre of town now closed (Just how long is it since Cryers moved out, must be going on a few years now????) So someone tell me again why they built all the new shops where the market used to be???
america has the same problem where asda/wallmart has destroyed towns economies

why were the new shops built - probably a huge backhander got the go ahead for it because it was never needed from teh begining because all teh buisneses had already moved like dixons, currys, norweb , granada televisions , gas showrooms, tesco( although now back) and prbably a lot more i cant remeber right now

Re: another shop closing?

House prices are rising and people are moving into the area because it's a very central location to a lot of major towns with motorways to all of those towns. Plus, it's rural so a lot of people who don't need to depend on being in an urban location are moving in - i.e. we've got one of the highest number of web designers in the UK aside from London.

The only drawback of all this is that these people don't shop in town centres. They either shop where they work or they shop in out of town stores at the weekend or they shop on line.

But to bring people in you don't need the big stores. You need to be a specialist town i.e. the best place to get cheese, or the furniture capital or the arts centre. You get a reputation for something specific and some of the chain stores would return.

Re: another shop closing?

I can perfectly understand what you say Gayle

At my works they think I'm nuts for living here, yet I tell them the following

"30 mins from M/c centre, 45 mins from the sea, an hour from the Lakes, Ribble Valley on the doorstep, countryside within minutes, a choice of 5 good market towns within 30 mins and more out of town shopping centres than you can shake a stick at. Add to the mix house prices at least half what you pay in Cheshire and I can afford a better standard of living then my friends who are on 25% more than me"

The downsides? 60 mins each way to commute but tbh if I worked in B/burn and had to be in at 9 then it would probably take a good 30-40 mins

High council tax ( I pay more for Band C than mates at work in band E!!!) is not good though, have a word Gayle
