I've driven through these areas you mention. There always seems to be a high number of BMWs, Subaru Impreza WRCs and beat beat-up Toyotas being driven around at breakneck speed. Do you think this could have something to do with siting of the traffic calming measures?

You are right... did you notice the age and ethnic origin of the nutters driving them by any chance?

Re: another young boy
that road can be horrendous especialy when all the parents double park their cars to watch their kids play football leaving the road to be over 300 yards of single file traffic with a brow to boot so you cant see cars coming the other way
i drive down there a lot and i am surprised there arnt more accidents with a mixture of speeding drivers , inconsiderate parking , kids running out between parked cars and not wearing anything visable in the dark
wouldnt hurt to start teaching kids how to cross a road safely in schools again either
hope the lad gets well and that somthing gets sorted with that road because as of yet there isnt one saftey measure in place , no crossing and not even so much as a speed bump

Re: another young boy
I work in Ossy, my work involves driving all over town usually in the evening. I am amazed at the amount of youths that walk (swagger!) along in the middle of the road and refuse to move. I was going along Catlowhall street the other week and encountered about 7 of them. They didn't look that old either, all waltzing along in the road. Do they think they are invincible?
I'm not saying that this is what happened with this young lad and I hope he gets well quickly.

iv seen kids jumping out infront of cars on harvey street trying to scare drivers into swerving thinking they are big and clever and like your self have experinced kids deliberatly standing in the road making cars stop infact they also like to do it near the war memorial standing on the traffic island jumping out or pretending to jump out infront of cars as they pass by
i used to be firm believer that a driver should be aware of the dangers of the road and be held fully resposible if they hit somone but with the stupid games kids play and total disregard for their own safety when crossing a road i can understand why a driver could easily hit somone and not be able to prevent an accident
its amazing how a teenage yob provoking an accident can suddenly become a saint and expert road crosser once it gets run over
again im not saying this is what this particular child was doing but it happens

Re: another young boy
woulda thought road safety is something parents should teach their children. Its not difficult to tell the child to stop look and listen everytime they cross the road, teach them how to use a zebra crossing and to always wait for the green man (and then wait till the cars have stopped cos not all do)

Re: another young boy
All well and good teaching your kids to watch for the green man, or stop look and listen, personally I am sick to death of people walking straight over the road at pelicans when the red man is showing, they must know that you are trying to teach kids, but they selfishly just cross willy nilly, I usually say 'thanks for that, I am trying to teach the kids NOT to do that'

It is, but at my lad's school I seem to be the only parent who does it (perhaps there are some others that I don't see 'cos I'm late a lot). I stand behind him and let him do all the work. He even waves traffic on that stops for him (thinking they are doing him a favour) after a scare early on when I had to grab him as someone overtook the stopped car- on a zigzag!

My big bugbear is someone who steps into traffic within a 30 second walk of a pedestrian crossing. I see it all the time from my vantage point at the shop- in fact, if you'd been watching on the webcam 30 seconds ago, you'd have seen an idiot mum/guardian crossing at the double roundabout in Great Harwood centre, when there was a perfectly serviceable pelican crossing right next to her. My blood boils when it's someone who's endangering the lives of others- not just themselves.
On two occasions I've actually stopped and said: "Are you stupid?" tends to tarnish the ambiance when you say it to a neighbour though

hehe- me too. I get upset with parents who drag their kids across between parked cars without showing them how to check. they are not just endangering their lives at that moment, but in the future when the kid runs out thinking traffic isn't something to be scared of.

I travel on Harvey Street a lot, and whilst its certainly true that many drivers do drive far to fast along there, i have to agree that there is a big problem with teenagers loitering in the roads and deliberatly causing problems for drivers. This occurs mainly around the Community centre area.
I notice in the Newspaper though, that they are drawing attention to the fact that there were two "Elderly" Couples in the car. Do you think someone is already trying to apportion blame??
Best Regards - Taggy
