Are cars getting too powerful

Are cars getting too powerful? Who needs to go 0 - 60 in 2 1/2 seconds?
Id hate to be the insurer for this car. According to the aol report he'd rented the car - for £20,000 for the day! Who'd pay that much to rent a car? Someone wanting to show off isnt it. But surely they should have made sure that the person who was renting it could handle a car with all that power. I know i couldnt.

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
Not they aint getting too powerful. And if he wants to spend 20 grand on renting the fastest road car in the world for a day and if he can afford it go for it pal. Just dont crash it lol. Hey think about who insursers the only 2 remaining 1968 Ferrari 250GTO's in the world... yours for only £12,000,000

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
I think you should have quite a few test drives or lessons before driving a very fast car like that it is different to the bog standard cars.

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
Yes they are. How can a Government that is committed to be green and saving the planet allow such vehicles on the road.
Cars should have a max limited horsepower depending on the vehicle type. My large ish estate is 110bhp and is more than powerful enough for anything you would need it for. It towed a car trailer with the same car on the back which was about 400kg over weight on the motorway above the limit of 60mph with relative ease so would pull a caravan at max weight no problem. When we go camping it is full to the gills and tows a small trailer like it is not there. Why would it need to be more powerful?
I am also in agreement to speed limiters on cars as well.

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
you need it to be more powerful because we don't all want to wait 3 years to get to 60. There is no law against acceleration. when overtaking the more powerful the car teh quicker you are out of danger.
Powerful (and fast) cars can also be used on private tracks as well as public roads.
I choose to run around in an estate car just like Neil. It does the equivilant of 50 mpg just like Neils, it will carry as much if not more weight than Neils and pull heavier trailers than Neils. It also happens o have 200bhp and do 0-60 in 8 and a bit seconds. Unlike my bike that does it in ~3 seconds. on the motorway if there is a situation I have a choice, I can accelerate very quickly from 70-90 temporarily OR brake, Neil only has one option. Which is safer? I know what my 1st choice would be.
Speed limiters will not cut accidents as idiots will just drive against teh limiter just like wagons do now irrespective of if its safe to do so. Speed does NOT kill, INAPPROPRIATE speed Kills!

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
What car you got ian? I agree with the points you have made. What speed would people have the cars limited at? 70? Who here can honestly say they have never gone over 70?

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
Good choice. Karma given. Im suprised at my volvo as its 14 yrs old and in the owners manual it says it as " swift performance making use of its full 89BHP " Well it isnt much but it can still do 120MPH... or so ive been told anyway lol

Re: Are cars getting too powerful
oh yes it is, about as practical as it gets, safe as only a volvo can be, comfortable(full leather, heated seats, wood pack, air con, cruise, 4 speed sports auto box), fast and on LPG cheap to run (apart from the group 16 insurance but coming with halo as I do its 350 fully comp).
Cheers for teh K

Sorry but that is a poor excuse for speeding Ian. Cars should be and will eventually be limited on bhp.
The excuse will be enviromental not safety but I do think it will happen. Will you still feel the same about your car when the duty on LPG is increased more in line with petrol? After all both are fossil fuels. I know LPG burns cleaner but LPG only give's out 20% less CO2 than petrol and CO2 emission's are the current green buzz words.
