Are they NUTS?
Trust the National Union of Teachers to serve a double whammy.
Not only are they suggesting that the Koran be taught in all schools, but they also seek to disassociate their members from 'Armed Services recruitment drives in schools.
Let's wave the white flag now!

Re: Are they NUTS?
I dont think its a good idea to teach any kind of religion in school. Accademic pursuit should be based on the teaching of knowledge to equip our youngsters with the necessary life skills and know-how to be able to make a place for themselves in the real world. I dont think belief mechanisms should really come into it - that should be provided, if so desired, by our communities, churches etc. Time has told us over and over again that the more you push religion onto people, be it directly or indirectly, the end result is always some form of conflict. I'm a catholic, but I am a catholic by my own choice - everyone else should be allowed to get there on their own as well.

The story, for anyone who hasn't seen it.
Fury over plan to let imams teach the Koran in state schools | the Daily Mail
...and yes, I think the members of the N.U.T., who voted for this motion, are nuts.

Re: Are they NUTS?
but at least people will have some understanding of other religions. I went to Church(the building/religion not teh suburb!) till I was 18 and we now attend St Johns and until last year i knew very little of Islam. How can I be tolerant if I have no understanding of what I am being asked to tolerate?

No white flag, just get the armed services to disassociate themselves from teaching their recruits, after all it's not their job to make up for the lack of education in schools.

Re: Are they NUTS?
A faith school has the right to teach it’s own religion to the pupils.
A secular school should have one period a week to discus all religions prevalent in this country to help the pupils come to some understanding of them.

Re: Are they NUTS?
ok, I am RC. i have worked in mainstream schools where the majority of children are muslim. i dont think its fair to teach one particular religion and i think that a small part of a few religions should be taught.which has to include the religion that plays the biggest part in the school. Teaching the Qoran would benefit all the children. and is not that different to the bible. Many of the stories are the same and i have found that the muslim children seem to know more about Jesus than the white children. It isnt fair to ignore the childrens religion and concentrate on another. This was highlighted for me the christmas before last which fell at the same time as Eid. All seasonal work concentrated on christmas and Eid was hardly mentioned.

Re: Are they NUTS?
ok ema, please explain why teaching the quoran would benifit all children? this is a christian country n surely the religion of the country should be taught here its that simple. it is not practical to teach all religions in school, education for the real world supercedes that.

Re: Are they NUTS?
because a better understanding af a religion gives us a better, more informed view of the people and imo would stop the stupid pointless prejudice and stereotyping that seems so common atm
