...if the police hadnt lost the video of the driver making his escape that PB so kindly found for me teh culprits may have been caught
Next time you "retire" a mobile phone, consider using it with software such as this (there's an IOS equivalent). The crash I mentioned above happened on the first day I had it installed, so I'd have been able to prove at least that I was stationary, and it wasn't my fault.
I'm not sure if it would have any difference on premium etc, because with it not pointing backwards, the insurance company still can't unload their costs on to the faulty driver (if he'd driven off). But they could at least have followed the same pathway as their "hit by an uninsured driver" route.
(At the time of writing, audio was being replaced...)

True - it's more geared towards proving culpability to insurance companies.
However, when I used to have a studio, the Great Harwood webcam was hosted in my window (it's in the old town hall, now) I had three visits from the police three times to ask if incidents had been caught on the camera. One each of vandalism, vehicle theft and drunken assault. They said they would have been able to use captured video as evidence even if it was just a regular video file, because it would be treated as reliably as an "eye witness".
