we'll soon have shops like they do in places such as glasgow, all caged in and pass your goods through a little hatch.

There aren't any shops like that in Glasgow city centre, though there are in the outlying districts, just as there are in Manchester and Liverpool.

And have been for a long time, I can remember in the sixties when I worked in Liverpool quite a lot, we used to work from the back of the van, not in Liverpool we didn't, the van was always locked up whilst we were inside the shop or the contends wold hve gone walkies

Re: Armed robbery on union road.

That is shocking. Its the first I've heard of it and I work at the Burnley Road Shop.I work night shifts and 9 out of 10 times am on my own. Its getting worse now its getting dark and cold nights. Usually there are people walking about coming out of pubs etc but now its so cold people are generally staying in so it can be very scary.

Re: Armed robbery on union road.

I used to work at the Ossy branch (this was years ago now though) and I was on my own when the shop got robbed, 3 men walked in and just started picking up cases of beer and bottles of wine and started walking out. I pressed the panic button then, stupidly went round the front and tried to stop them, I got a smack in the face for my troubles! I was ok just shaken up. Anyway, they were caught about 3 hours later.

What was bad about this was it was about 2pm in the afternoon, and they didnt have anything covering their faces.

Anybody tries to rob them shops for money is going to be disappointed because of the safe system that they have.

I agree MissTechnophobe it was very scary working on your own at night, even on a busy stretch of road.

Re: Armed robbery on union road.

I agree with you Lolly. thats happened to me a couple of times now. Once when working with Accylass and a few weeks ago. A lad just walked in grabbed a crate of beer and walked back out. The Police came around took a statement and I believe they've got them.

Its not in the best of areas as it is. I've never called the Police so much in all my life as since I've been working there!

Its also true the salestaff don't have access to the safe. We only keep very small amounts of cash in our tills, especially at this time of year, the rest is dropped into the safe where nobody is able to get to it. It really is pointless robbing Boozebusters but I guess the people who do it are either on drugs or the like. Sad but true.

Didn't last very long! I think the general concensus is if you've not been threatened or attacked, then you have to work on your own. I can understand from a cost point of view, but from a safety point of view... No one should have to work on their own at night, but what choice do you have when you need the job and the hours suit???

Skelmersdale used to have off-licences similar to that 25-30 years ago, also self service garages wouldn't switch the pumps on until you went in and paid in advance.

So really what is happening is that the rough areas are gradually spreading out, how long before we all wear 'designer' flak jackets just to do a days shopping?
