Post Re: Atkins Diet

ruud giving up smoking is a job and a half on its own.. i wouldnt fancy a detox and giving up.... I gave up smoking about 7 years ago after being on around 30 a day for 25 years... The weight piled on and my teeth went manky *  Now getting wieght back off and lots of visits to dentist and I can now give big smiles again

* dentist explained that my teeth may have looked nice and good when smoking but the problem was under my gums... when i gave up smoking my gums got better and the badness then came out from under and ruined my teeth... they started breaking and going bad  Months and months of treatement and I now have good clean teeth and healthy gums and there all mine  But its one to watch out for mate.. I thought mine where ok until i gave up smoking..

Post Re: Atkins Diet

Harry, up until Sunday I used to smoke 30 - 40 a day and had done for the last 11 years, however I decided to pack in, and by not drinking at the mo neither it is probably the best time, as the killer for me is when I have had a drink I crave Nicotine, so by staying off the beer the nicotine cravings should be gone ( hopefully ) by the time I start drinking again

Post Re: Atkins Diet

I shall keep you posted I tried last year and last a whole 3 weeks, so really need to make an effort this time, my missus is right behind me though as she is an anti smoker so a clip round the ear if I cheat, and also I dont want to bring my kid's up thinking it's a good thing to do either, what is it with smoking your parents did it, tell you not to do it but you do, then you try to tell your kids the same

I dont smoke myself, but my sister who does tried the nicotine patches, she did well for six weeks then the cravings got to much for her needless to say she gave up on the patches. She now smokes a lower tar and nicotine cigarette which is something i suppose better than nothing.

Post Re: Atkins Diet

Afraid not.. Lower tar don't mean squat I am afraid... Bit like changing over to methol as people used to do...

I did patches for a month and then for quite some time I smoked herbal fags.. You buy them from the chemist.. used to cost me about 1.50 per pack of 20.. then gave them up which was a lot easier cus no nicotinme in them..

Its the nicotine you have to worry about.. Not tar

Post Re: Atkins Diet

Lettie, You have been misinformed again!! Please advise your Doc friend on the following:

"Controversial US diet guru Dr Robert Atkins has died, aged 72, a week after he injured his head in a fall.
Dr Atkins died at New York's Weill-Cornell Medical Center and was surrounded by his wife and close friends, said Richard Rothstein, his spokesman.

He had suffered a severe head injury on 8 April after falling on an icy pavement while walking to his office in New York.

The doctor shot to fame in the early 1970s with his Atkins diet, a low-carbohydrate, high-protein eating regime.

Followers of the Atkins diet are allowed to eat unlimited meat, eggs, fish and shellfish.

But they can only eat small amounts of carbohydrates, such as bread, potatoes and pasta. "

As reported on http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2957343.stm

I am not a fan of the diet but think it is wrong if people are putting incorrect information about....... (not you personally Lettie)

I think the only extra information that lettie added was that Dr Atkins suffered from cardiomyopathy, which is true, and he did have a cardiac arrest. He was hospitalised in April last year.

The article omitted to say that when he fell, he tripped over his dog!

He eventually died after several days to to complications after a subdural haematoma & had lapsed into a coma.

Thanks littlemo. The whole problem being with the weight loss thing is to find a diet that you can constantly use and keep to without putting all that fat on.Some doctors even reckon it is all genetic. Hence you eat more of a certain type of food and you lose weight where as another person eating the same kind of food makes them gain weight
