I know many people that have tried that one and have put on weight! it's not a diet of choice really anymore although i'm sure it's still popular in some parts of the world!

Whats wrong with asking a simple question? And besides which the only people who appear to be mentally challenged round here are those who believe in these quacks such as Atkins

There is one hell of a difference between being slightly overweight and being clinically obese, and how the problem is addressed. Relying and encouraging charlatons like Atkins does no good whatsoever.

Post Re: Atkins Diet

There is a lot of controversy about the Atkins diet. Has been since it first surfaced decades ago.

What most worries medical experts are the long term effects it can have on the body.

Also most people are extremely lethargic for a week or so after first starting on this plan, due to the lack of carbohydrates.

Point worth noting. Dr Atkins, (recently deceased) never managed to keep to his ideal weight!

Check out websites that are both for & against the Atkins diet.

Whatever diet plan you decide to follow, make sure you consult your GP first.

Also Lettie is our medical expert on here, and may be able to give you some info.

Post Re: Atkins Diet

I definately would not recommend Atkins Diet. Many of my medical colleagues have actually tried it, some have lost weight, but have re-gained it very quickly after resuming normal diet, some have also been extremely lethargic.

Sadly Dr Atkins died of renal failure. Whether this was caused by the diet or not is debateable, as people with kidney problems are treated with LOW Protein diets, so long term heart and renal problems may be a factor. By all means, try it as a short term thing and let us know how you get on. The best way to lose weight is to cut down on high calorie and fatty foods (most people can lose a few pounds just by giving up beer for a couple of weeks) and also to exercise more. Basically you have to use up more calories than you eat. ;D

Good luck Ruud, let us know how you get on.

Post Re: Atkins Diet

Well said Lettie - There is no great mystery about losing weight (If you got to much already). It's simple - a balanced diet & regular exercise. The only exception to that is someone who is overweight, sadly for clinical reasons.
