Re: Bad habits/manners....
I agree in general most Americans over 25 are quite polite. I find many of the younger ones thinking it's somehow cool to be rude. Like anywhere, you bump into one or two rude people then you tend to generalize about all of em.
My friends would mock me cause I'd say please after each item ordered at a Mcdonalds Burger King or in general any restaurant. Just a bit overboard I guess.

See that's one that seems daft to me. What does it matter? It's another silly social rule, like having to know always to start from the outside of a cutlery placing.
It's a good job you were sat at the other end of the table from me at Monte Cristo, I always eat with just a fork now, it's the only way I can get the food to my gob.

Re: Bad habits/manners....
I love eating with my fingers - a really good meal is supposed to be a sensual experience and you can't fully appreciate it unless you use your fingers (gosh did I just post that on a Sunday morning!).
However, if I was invited to your house Mez, I promise I would eat with a knife and fork and keep my elbows off the table, I always eat 'properly' in company! Because that's what manners really boil down to - being aware of your host's feelings and adapting your behaviour accordingly.
I'm a real stickler for please and thank you though!

Re: Bad habits/manners....
I love to eat with my fingers too Gayle, chips are just not the same are they with a knife and fork ..like to get the full taste not tarnished with the taste of steel on the palate.
Will admit (when I was little of course ) to licking the plate to soak up the last few drops of gravy on me plate. Luverly.

Re: Bad habits/manners....
Besides please and thank you, another bugbear of mine is people who push in at queues.
Everyone waiting patiently in turn for whatever, then someone tries to sneak in.
The language I shout out at these rude people isn't very polite.

i thought you'd posted 'the height of bad manners is to light a ciggy whilst the rest of the people are still finishing theirs'.
