Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
Pre warning. Long "winded" thread.
That is a weird thread title you might be thinking as you click it to see what the hell I am on about. Well. Today I had the Colonopsy and they said it was normal(good news at least). Just got to wait for the biopsy results.
Has anyone had this procedure? If so. Am I supposed to have much pain afterwards. Been back 3 hours now and stomach is a bit tender. Well. I have had a camera inserted inside my...and into my.... Well. I guess there should be some pain.
What do you think of the NHS on a whole?
Can you feel that is turning into a rant thread? It is.
For quite some time; Docs trying to figure out what is wrong with me going faint and stuff. I was waiting 2nHalf months to see a neurologist. 1 month in I had a MRI done and they said " today we will be doing your neck" Weird I thought...
So. Later I finally made my way to Preston only to be told "I can't figure out why you are here" "To see neurologist" I said. "no, no. I am neurosurgeon".
Turned out it was a clerical error and all that wait- MRI etc was for nothing. Back to docs I go; yet again. Told doc that I had also been having problems going loose, at least once or twice per week for quite some time. Rearranged for me(this was august) was to see neurologist again and to go for a Colonopsy.
Nothing is explained. I still haven't received the neurologist appointment and I found myself in Burnley for what I was told would be an Endoscopy. Nope. It was just the finger and lets arrange a further date for Colonopsy(today)
So. What has this got to do with a football match.
I read the leaflet and it says you can have Gas & Air or Sedation. Sedation requires that you have someone pick you up and look after you for 24 hours. My house mate(friend of 30 years) wouldn't do this because " Blackburn VS Burnley is more important"
At the previous appointment- Why I thought I could just turn up and have the camera job. I don't know. Had to take a day of work yesterday and take some nasty stuff called Picolax. Nice day off work? Nope. This stuff is scarier than the Friday the 13th movies. You mix it with cold water and the stuff goes hot as hell. Felt like
I was in the science class.
So Today I got the bus and opted for Gas & Air. Nope. Turned out "only if I feel pain or extreme discomfort" So I had no sedation at all. It wasn't as bad as I had thought and I watched the monitor WHICH WAS THE STRANGEST THING I HAVE EVER WATCHED
Just before I am wheeled in I sign a disclaimer and the Doc tells me "1 in 1500 people have severe complications"
And guess what?
Either Blackburn or Burnley scored a goal right at the point of insertion.
Why do I know this?
Because the doctors had the radio on during the procedure. Wait a minute. Isn't this a potentially dangerous procedure. Oh well.

The NHS is a bit like the Curate's Egg.......there are some very good bits, but also some not so good bits.
Rob, I hope they get to the bottom(oooh, that was a pun and a half) of what is wrong with you....furthermore, I hope it is nothing serious and can be fixed by simple measures(a change of diet, a calmer lifestyle, cutting out the alcohol......as a last resort medication).
You made me smile.......Thank you for that!

Re: Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
It may be a day to day procedure to the docs but to the patient it is a nerve wracking experience. I had a chuckle about them listening to the radio but in reality its no laughing matter. I've had colitis for the last 8 years and have had these procedures and I don't think I'd do it without anaesthesia cos I think it I'm a bit of a coward. I don't think you should be in much pain either other than the air they put in you when they're looking with the camera. Hope you feel better soon.

What do you expect? If he's so disloyal that he doesn't support his hometown football club, he's not going to show any loyalty towards friends.
Hope it's sorted soon, mate.

Yes..it would have made a good blog.....but it will be read by more where it is now.
Colonoscopy is something that more people are having...especially if you are over a certain age and enlisted onto the Bowel Cancer study.
It is good to get such subjects(which tend to be a bit taboo) out into the open.

Re: Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
Fifteen years ago I had one done 'from the other end'.
As the paperwork was being done it was that nurse's job to persuade you that you wouldn't need more than a throat numbing spray to get through it - (since a mild anesthetic means after care and extra time spent with you ).
I consented to that, but due to my extreme 'gagging/retching' they had to halt the procedure, withdraw it, and sedate me before it could be done.
I can't imagine that 'rear end approach' would be as awful as that.

I guess so. But. Privacy settings means that 8 people would see it and I was hoping for some feedback from those that may have had it and/or feed back about NHS. My experience lately is in the negative.
I have been in a lot of pain and have been in bed since writing the post.

Re: Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
I have had this procedure done three times & the throat one once, in terms of inserting the camera I would agree with Margaret that the one down the throat is worse than the other way. However, the other three were all completely different experiences - the first was just a short exploratory one & done without any sedation but I was fine afterwards. However when I was called back for the full colonoscopy the nursing staff recommended sedation as I had been very nervous the first time & they thought it would help me to relax. They were right, I trotted in confident that I would be 'out of it' during the procedure - how wrong I was, I was given sedation but it was what they called twilight sedation. It was like being in a nightmare, I was in pain for much of the time but could not communicate this to the nurses. The pain afterwards was awful too & lasted for over a week, I went to my own GP who said it was only to be expected after the procedure due to things having been 'disturbed', gave me painkillers & told me to rest. I then rang the endoscopy unit for advice, they said I should not have had that level of pain afterwards so if you're in any doubt Restless I'd give the hospital a ring.
When they called me back for the procedure to be done again, I was terrified it would be the same but on this occasion I opted for gas & air which was much better for me as I felt more in control of what was happening & I could tell them if I was in pain. I even managed to watch it on the screen that time & was absolutely fine afterwards - at least once I'd come down from the gas & air.

Rob......that is good advice.
Get on the phone in the morning and speak to the staff of the endoscopy unit.

Re: Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
As Roy Walker once said on catchphrase...NHS now stands for "No Hospital Safe".

Re: Blackburn VS Burnley and A Colonopsy.
have camera in both ends each year and i just pray that if NHS cuts reduce the theater to just the one camera they do the top end first
ps:
stomach pain is normal they inflate you with air so expect much farting too which will ease the pain or aches coz its trapped air is all and a great excuse for farting at will
P.P.S
they took a sample of poop which came back BRFC positive

Wasn't quite as at will as I had thought it would be. But yeah. Days later and a big mass escape of air gave me some relief
