Over 20 yrs ago i worked for a summer on a tip in Liverpool -part of an experiment for the Environmental Advisory Unit of Liverpool Uni. on the reclamation of land and the re-use of landfill sites for growing agricultural crops and vegetables. There were illegal "workers" at the tip every day routing about and in general looking for metals to reclaim, they would set up fires to burn away the plastic from wires etc -they were known as "Totters". They were tollerated generally and the workers at the tip knew most of them, so i don't know if it's the same up at Whiney Hill but i imagine they have a pretty good idea of who the regular visitors are. This may not be the case of course if it's a night-time activity -but surely they must have some security cameras to control access..

Ok, I did not use the words 'in my personal experience' so I suppose that was generalising the situation and maybe I should apologise for that, but when something like this happens it brings it all back.
All I know is that, before the experience I had, I would not have believed how many cock ups the police can, in some cases, make & after what I & others have gone through because of their mistakes, I would not wish that on anyone.

Firstly, I am sure the Police want to know everything to do with this case and any other, if however you have a case you think has been mishandled or ignored then contact these folk:-

Independent Police Complaints Commission

They may help you.

I used to love going to the tip with my Dad when I was a child. Rooting for things.

I was so exited when I brought home my brand new wheel chair.

How my friends loved to push me up and down Stanhill Lane.

It was shortly after this I was told I would be allowed a bike after all.

There were always people rooting about on the tip then.

After odd bits and pieces they needed to fettle something.

All for nowt.

Re: body found at whinny hill tip

why are peeps not allowed to take things from the tip anymore? surely it would be recycling and less stuff to put into a landfill, you'd think they would be thankful for people taking things away, ok maybe not electricals, but other things

It's a very dangerous place to go - lots of really heavy machinery, the possibility of subsidence as it's very unstable is also a reason why they don't want unauthorised people out there.

You are so irreverent at times G, I really did work at the tip! I was like Mary, Mary quite contrary -i had vegetable gardens planted on three different sites in Liverpool, I had to monitor growth and harvest the various crops planted and test them for the presence of heavy metals. To keep the Totters from nicking the veg we had to put up skull and cross-bone notices (painted very un-artistically by me!) as many couldn't read and in the end most of the stuff really was poisonous.

I see that the victim up at Whinney Hill has been named and was so young-presumably they'll soon be able to say how he died...if he was there "Totting" it wil be a warning to others to stay clear.

...and I really found a wheel chair at the tip, because I was told I was too young for a bike.

I painted it beige, with black dots.

I loved going rooting for treasure, at Church or Stanhill tip.

It's in my blood.

We have a vase by great grandmother found on the tip over the White Ash.

Late C19th, by Booth's, rare pattern, and quite valuable now.

I'll carry on rooting.

Although skips are better places, now the tips are out of bounds.

When I did get a bike my wheel chair ended up as part of the proto-type windmill we had, which powered our lights in the power cuts in the seventies.

Recycling at it's best.

The real eco-warrior was Shirley.

My little friend who pushed me up and down Stanhill Lane.

The power behind the throne.
