Typical nanny state junk as usual. Goverment telling us what we should be doing and taxing folk to the hilt for the privelage. Why don't they do something positive like tackle the drug problem???

The other lot are no better. Last week Iain Duncan Smith published a report recommending a ten percent increase on the tax for alcohol.

I certainly wouldn't like to own a pub at this moment in time.

Great record by Slim Dusty on a 78.
You can listen to it at http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/song.mp3 and sing along to the words below.

All together now!

Oh it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer

Now the publican's anxious for the quota to come
And there's a far away look on the face of the bum
The maid's gone all cranky and the cook's acting queer
Oh what a terrible place is a pub with no beer

Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He breasts up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a sneer
As the barman says sadly the pub's got no beer

Then the swaggie comes in smothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told, he says what's this I hear
I've trudged fifty flamin' miles to a pub with no beer

Now there's a dog on the v'randa, for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinking wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes in fear
It's no place for a dog 'round a pub with no beer

And old Billy the blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he's gone home cold sober to his darling wife
He walks in the kitchen, she says you're early Bill dear
But then he breaks down and tells her the pub's got no beer

Oh it's hard to believe that there's customers still
But the money's still tinkling in the old ancient till
The wine buffs are happy and I know they're sincere
When they say they don't care if the pub's got no beer

So it's-a lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the campfire at night we'll hear the wild dingoes call
But there's-a nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of that pub with-a no beer

There was a follow up record entitled:
The Answer To The Pub With No Beer also sung by Slim Dusty on a 45.

You can listen to it at http://uk.geocities.com/[email protected]/song1.mp3

Cool Re: Boozers beware -you are next

Having established a precedent with the anti smoking campaign the government is now going down the same road with booze.
First warnings about alcohol on bottles and cans.
Now a suggestion to increase the tax on booze.
Next step ban advertising except at point of sale.
Wasn’t there something about increasing the age for buying booze and drinking in a pub?
What about ration cards limiting booze to the recommended weekly levels? Is that a possibility?
Returning to the previous pub opening times?

Who is going to be first to suggest that as drink related illness and injuries cost the NHS a small fortune and that anyone with such an illness or injury should pay for their treatment.

Those drinkers who supported the anti-smoking campaign will live to rue their actions.

Re: Boozers beware -you are next

i was havin a chat on sat nite with couple of irish blokes who were stayin in manc

and he was like fair enough its good but its not right. each place shud've been allowed to choose if they were smokin or no smoking and then if non-smokers wanted to go into a smokin place they cudnt complain.

i personally thought that the next target wud either be the booze or fried food/fattening foods. esp with this whole health drive goin on they'll start putting in laws sayin no chip shops within a certain of the schools etc

Pub's face enough competition as it is, with the cheap supermarket and off-licece chains selling beer wine and spirits at cut prices, without civil servants poking their noses in.

To be fair, students do studies on alcohol use all the time and foreign students always think england is over the top with alcohol usage and they find the way we use it really unusual, and thats students from all over the globe.

I think english drinkers are a bit shameful and the drinking culture is a bit of an embarrassment.
