I agree 100%. I was Born at 89 Church Street, Church. Sad it may be. But I am proud of the fact I was born in Church, more the fact I was born at home in that house. Although I have been away for over 30 years, being born over there is what makes me what I am. It might not be much to others but to me it is. God forbid that today a man may live his life in Accrington but must consede to the fact that he was born in Blackburn.

Born and raised in Accy and proud of it. I might have been away a while but its still to me my home town. As for those born and raised in Accy wanting their kids born there will have to opt for home births.

Re: Born In Burnley...

The telegraph said that up to 2,400 babies who are normally born in Blackburn will be born in Burnley. Blackburn currently has nearly 4,000 births per year. Therefore not all babies will be born in Burnley. This government are looking to encourage women with normal pregnancies to deliver at home or in birth centres (which will be local). All the current research evidence shows that it is safer for women with normal pregnancies to deliver in these environments than in hospitals. Birth centres are run by midwives and tend not to have access to doctors, they provide a homely environment. As discussed in the hospital closure thread, we had birth centres for a long time.... Accy Vic, Rough Lee, Bramley Meade, Bull Hill, all of which were closed because it became the norm to go to hospital, therefore birth centres became less cost effective to keep open. The government are trying to reverse this trend now and have realised that it is more cost effective to encourage women to deliver normally, without interventions such as monitoring, epidural, artificial rupture of membranes etc. Research shows that one intervention leads to another and raises the chances of needing a forceps, ventouse or operative delivery. These interventions are not done in the home or birth centre environments and the majority of women need less pain relief as a result of being allowed to labour naturally.

There will still be babies born locally both in Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. I am more concerned with the people of Burnley having to travel the extra few miles to A&E when they are in critical conditions..... It's bad enough that we have to go to Blackburn from Accrington.

Re: Born In Burnley...

Christ Lettie you made the birth of a baby sound like a horror movie production. So the govenment wants to go back to the good old days eh well we will have to wait and see if the control freaks will allow it.

My cousin was born in Blackburn and I take great delight in saying to her kids she is English as it really winds her up. She lives up here not far from me and her parents are Scots.

Nevermind Mel you could always hide the bad bits.

You're right there, Wyn.
My brother was one of the last to be born in Accy in January '94, it's a sad state that Accy Vic is just used for sprained wrists & shuts at 9 (handy for an A&E eh?).

Back to the point of the thread - you've got to be a very moronic person to object what town your child is born because of 'dingles' however it is worrying that the travel involved would cause further pain to people.

Kid's will always be born in accrington, as was one of my grandchildren, she is ten years old today, and was born in Nuttall Street, you will never be able to control nature, they arrive when they are ready. What's wrong with Burnley, (brave members only need reply).
Surely a good hospital is a good hospital for all that.

Re: Born In Burnley...

I don't think it's the quality of the hospital that's in question, or even the fact that people wouldn't want to have their babies in Burnley - the problem is the distance. When I was pregnant with Maddie I had a bit of a problem and I needed to get to a hospital very quickly, I was at my mother-in-law's in Darwen at the time, I don't even want to think about what would have happened if I'd had to get myself over to Burnley!
