Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
When I did mine I had to provide info on where I had worked, where I had lived, any criminal convictions including motoring pointsand something else that escapes me at the moment. These are sent away and your past is double checked (I know as someone I hadn't seen in 10 years told me that they had received a call about me when I bumped into them in town)
As you said though, any accusations wouldn't come to light unless someone mentioned them and even then I guess it would only be hearsay

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
And if there had never even been any accusations? We will just never know how many people get away with abuse because no-one but the abused child ever knows.

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
OK, but lets look at this particular case, the guy in the opening post of this thread. If he'd had a CRB check would he have been rejected? I doubt it because no-one would have known that he'd be likely to do any of what he did until he actually did it would they?

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
which was my point exactly. teh fact that he was presumed innocent meant even if he had been CRB'd then he would have been cleared. The point of my post was what could you do to protect against this, nothing springs into my mind

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
My daughter is a Guider (Brown Owl for a local pack). Anyone who helps in any capacity, in Scouting/Guiding, has to be CRB checked first. She, herself, had to supply a copy of her own CRB certificate to my granddaughter's school when she volunteered to go on a school trip as a helper. As you rightly point out, though, the person who hasn't been caught has no record so someone could, in theory, have been getting away with abuse for decades - and still be regarded as "trustworthy".

I thought that everyone who comes into contact through paid or voluntary work has to be CRB checked. At our church all the sunday school teachers are checked, all the brownie/guide leaders, choirmaster, anyone who works with children in whatever capacity, they're all CRB checked. In schools all the staff, including office staff and welfare are checked too.

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
The CRB check will show if they have any convictions, also if there is any intelligence held on them from the Police National Computer, the Dept for Education and Skills or List 99 (List 99 is a sensitive and confidential document and access to it is strictly limited to individuals responsible for checking the suitability of applicants. The purpose of List 99 is to enable employers to safeguard against employing a barred person. It should be emphasised that not all those on the list are perceived to be a danger to children).
It's a good way of safeguarding against those with a history, as it is a background check. It can do little to assist with someone who has no history of such behaviour.

Re: Bowley Scout Camp Rapist!
Obviously it isn't compulsory in some situations, which doesn't really make sense. If there's an assumption that people who run youth clubs or teach in Sunday Schools must be innocent then perhaps all the priests and what have you who have been convicted of abuse should be an example that it ain't necessarily so.
