Re: Breast Feeding, makes you more intelligent

This is not a new theory Jaysay .. who knows really ?

Suppose we are going to get lots of parents on here now, with children who were bottle fed, letting us know how clever and talented their children are ..

After all I was bottle fed, and look how clever and intelligent I am .. if I had been breast fed, may have turned out to be a Mrs. Einstein ...

Thinking about it I don't really know if I was or not, but having studied the facts probably not

I wasnt breast fed and dont think ive turned out that bad. I know people who were breast fed and cant say that they are the brightest bulbs

My boys wernt breast fed, I know it can be done but breastfeeding twins!!! They are only young but I think they are quite clever for their age

Re: Breast Feeding, makes you more intelligent

breast milk contains essential fatty iols that are needed for brain growth... it also contains endorphins and other stuff that i cant think of off the top of my head i dont think anyone knows why breast fed children are smarter, they think it is a mixture of everything including the mums hormones that are passed on....

the makers of formula milk are trying to mimic breast milk and they are getting pretty close... formula now contains fish oils which is well known for brain growth.

i was breast fed and so was tyler, and we are doing ok....

my opinion is that you can have breast fed children and bottle fed children that are smart or not so smart...its not just the way they are fed that matters but their upbringing.

I dont believe it, they also say that its better for your childs health, but thats not true either. Me and one of my brothers were bottle fed and we were both fine and are both very intelligent. My other brother was breast fed and he struggled at school and got childhood asthma, he was always ill and now has diabetes.

My neice wasnt breastfed and my nephew was, my neice is in very good health and my nephew suffers with bad asthma, My opinion is that its the child not what they are fed

thise things may be in the family and breast feeding may have made them less severe than they would have been...

formular milk is a processed food and breast milk is natural and tailored to the baby.... breast is best

But there is no proof of that, this is the thing, they cant say 100% that it makes your child smarter. Studies may show that it is but that is still not 100% proof, I think that this is something that no-one will ever know. If I was to have breastfed, then for the first 3 months at least (which they say is the most important) then my boys would have had all sorts of different drugs / painkillers / medication fed to them through the breast milk

Re: Breast Feeding, makes you more intelligent

This is just another one in a long line of tactics in the campaign from the Daily Mail to keep all women chained to their children for the first five years of their life. The Daily Mail might seem like a paper aimed at women but in fact, is raging a campaign against them. It doesn't want nice happy smiling well adjusted mothers and children it wants stepford wives.

And yes, I will tell you how old my eight year old daughter is - she's been assessed with a reading age of 10yr 9mths, a spelling age of 12 and was the only one in her class to get 20 out of 20 in the maths test and was graded at 3A for her predicted SATS scores.

She was bottle fed for about three days and then I decided it hurt too much and why on earth shouldn't Chris be getting up in the middle of the night for a baby that didn't sleep?

That was my theory, not with Chris obviously but I was the one getting up all night (infact night and day were all one to me, I would grab 5 minutes sleep where I could and lived off 3 - 4 cans of red bull a day!)

Re: Breast Feeding, makes you more intelligent

I wrote an article about it for a competition in the Daily Express once. It was printed but I didn't win.

I am obviously a bad parent; a wicked, evil mother that deserves a severe public flogging. Not only did I go back to work after the birth of my daughter but also I chose not to breast feed either of my children. How cruel and thoughtless could I possibly be? But hand on a minute, where are the two weedy, asthmatic, delinquents that I’m supposed to be raising? Oh, I know, they’re somewhere in the statistics that try to make me feel guilty for the choices I have made in life.

These are choices that a large majority of mothers have to make for economic reasons. And yet we’re vilified for wanting to provide the best for our children. The best doesn’t mean the most expensive trainers or the most expensive toys, it means the best love and care and attention.

Our two much adored children eat well, sleep well and are secure in the knowledge that my husband and I are providing for them.

So what of my husband, of course he’s perfect. There’s no mention that his working is affecting their upbringing. There’s also no mention that by bottle-feeding he got chance to bond with them better. There’s no mention that with him sharing the late night feeds I got enough sleep and never suffered from postnatal depression. No, there’s no mention of any of that because as we all know, parenting is a mother’s role not an equal opportunity job. Perhaps it’s time for a new report!
