Britcliffe wants to stand as our M.P.

It had to happen, especially with Greg Pope bowing out.

Hyndburn Council leader launches bid to become MP (From Blackburn Citizen)

Third time lucky?

In the present circumstances, a good independent with local connections could split the Tory/Labour vote and should have a pretty good chance. Forget about the others.

See, I knew there was a hat was involved, as I mentioned in post seven of this thread.

With the unpopularity of the government he'll never get a better chance.

I bet he's pleased that he bowed to public pressure over changing the name of the borough.

It'll be nice to have a matching set.

Re: Britcliffe wants to stand as our M.P.

I'm worried how he'd cope in London.

He increased Hyndburn councillor's food and overnight accommodation allowances, because he found London frightfully expensive.

With all the current furore over M.P.'s expenses, how on earth would he cope if they are cut back?

So if elected, would Britcliffe still continue to be Leader of HBC and sit on LCC? From which of these jobs could he claim the most expenses?

Must have made up his mind very quickly as he was only toying with the idea when I spoke to him last Thursday

Is Britcliffe really the best the Tories can offer for Hyndburn? It is a sad reflection on the Borough.

I honestly don't know for certain.

I'm pretty sure you can't be a borough/County councillor, and a M.P.

If you can I can't think of an example.

Well that raises the issue of whether you can sit on all three at the same time. I always thought that you couldn't but perhaps one of our more knowledgeable politicos may know for definite. Andrew, where are you when we need you?

I recall some years ago there were Northern Ireland Politicians who were elected to Stormont, Westminster and Brussels....one hell of an expenses racket.

They tried the Burmese ex-convict at the last General Election, and he failed, so he probably is their best bet.

Although he's been undefeated in his Ossy ward for many years, it'll be interesting to see how popular he is in the rest of the borough...for a third time.

I don't think this announcement is any great suprise, as I hinted at (jokingly) last week in a thread.

Still, andrewb leaves university next summer, and there might be a job going at Westminster for a Tory tea boy.

I can tell you now Britcliffe is hated in Church...he is never seen there and any appearance would inevitably result in a body hanging from one of the Henry Street lamp posts. I think his popularity lies in Baxenden, Harwood, Altham and the like.

As for Tory/Labour tea boys, that lark I suspect will shortly all be over...voters want someone with a bit of experience of life before they're an MP. Anyway, I thought andrewb was next off to the LSE, to join a list of famous alumini such as JFK, Mick Jagger, Cherie Booth, me and Monica Lewinsky.

Talking of him prompted me to reread this old thread.

Well, I've checked through the Government's website and I can't find any information about whether you can be a Councillor, County Councillor and MP at the same time. Presumably there aren't any that hold all three posts because the work load would simply be too great for anyone person.
