Re: Broadway Insanity

How long would you expect a town centre to last ?
How long before a tidy and spruce up?
and how long before the paving is replaced, new planters lighting, street furniture etc??
How many times has broadway been redone? I've got no idea being an outsider. Both nuneaton and tamworth were done in late 80's when they were pedestrianised, both undertook further pedestrianisation two years ago 04 and tidied small parts of the previous scheme up. so thats about 15-20 years. Atherstone had a major refurbishment work, in 95, that made headline news with spiraling costs. The work went so over budget that a large chunk of the work was never completed, the main road equivalent to broadway, was meant to be resurfaced with stone but got left as tarmac. Then it started to fall apart, and the cobbled speed bumps had to be replaced with tarmac. It's still slowly falling apart and as it does the clay pavers, stone, rivern paving and cobbles get replaced with tarmac. full circle 11 years.

Re: Broadway Insanity

Thinking about it your lucky you've got trees, ours died, and got cut down, and were never replaced. the rest were very weak, and recently also got cut down. They were part of the refurbishment too.

Re: Broadway Insanity

I just made the call for you. The trees have been in decline for several years with a lot of dead wood in them ( remind you of anything ). Some of that area of Broadway is actually owned by LCC not HBC. Something to do with it used to be part of the road or foot path. Sounds confusing to me all this HBC owns this and LCC owns that, it makes me think maybe Blackburn with Darwen had the right idea when they kicked LCC out.

So there you are. Trees taken down because of health reasons.

Re: Broadway Insanity

Thanks for that Neil I was about to make that call, however did those trees look ill to anyone or is it co-incidence that HBC are starting to refurbish the top end of Broadway and the aforementioned trees would have looked "out of place" with the ones already installed.

Hey,I know, lets go and check if the trees are ill...................... oops too late.

Well, Neil I never knew there was someone to contact about the trees......thanks for that.
And as far as health reasons........well they would say that wouldn't they?
Oh, and before anyone accuses me of being a tree hugger......I'm not....I just like to see green things growing....and hear birds singing.

I think it might be a bit of both. I was told that this year they were looking a little better than over the last few years but they still had a lot of dead wood. I suppose there must come a time to cut them down and start again. The last thing anyone would want is a lump of dead tree falling on a pedestrian.
She was very genuine on the phone Margaret

It's OK Neil I am just an old cynic....there is no cure for it either......I guess I will just have to wait until HBC think I am a hazard and they will chop me down too!

Re: Broadway Insanity

They could have just cut off the dead wood and left the remaining trees.....it seems as if everything is some kind of hazard today....it is amazing that millions of us managed to grow up and thrive.

I don't claim to be an expert but the trees looked alright to me and I have walked past them every day for the last 17 years. It all seems a little too convenient;either way the contractors are gonna have a hell of a job removing the stumps!
