Buses

This is because I read the "Mosquito" thread and Sara's answer and it reminded me of what bugged me outright when in Accy. Last week I was daft enough to catch the bus to Huncoat when the "hoolies" were on it and was in utter disgust at their behavior. These teens are all on the seats while OAP's HAD TO STAND.

At one time I am sure that a child had to surrender their seat to an adult as part of the conssesion to getting half fare. Whether this is still true I aint sure but to have these pensioners standing while they sit seems to be a disgrace and yet even when asked they wouldnt move nor even offer a seat because they wanted to be with their mates.

I used to think the worst thing in the world was a bad pint and cheeky kids but now its disrespectful to ther elders teens then the bad pint. Have we let standards of common decency fall that far or are these teens not taught common decency curtousy and manners anymore whether at school or home.

Re: Buses

I was always told to stand if a pensioner got on and give them my seat if i was sat near the front - that was off my mum though not the bus driver.

Re: Buses

The issue isn't so much the kids now, its the parents of the kids who seem to have no desire to see their kids grow up with decent values and morals.

Re: Buses

These kids probably have parents who wouldn't give up their seats to the elderly either. Common respect and decency means nothing to such people.

---------- thats the first i heard about that, but in days of old i would always give up my seat to elderly, women with shopping/ or pregnant. etc agree wholeheartheadly with entwi, its called UPBRINGING.

Re: Buses

The question is Cashy, when did the upbringing issue start to fail? Was it 2 generations back, 3/4??? was it the war(parents not coming back?)

I think the whole issue of social responsibility begs to be properly investigated so we know how to avoid making teh same mistakes again.

Re: Buses

Yeh i agree with the comments been made, sad in this day & age as manners cost nothing, something i do install in my own children, trouble with society today specially with the youth is that its a me, me & I society

It was on the Hynburn Corperation buses. I remember that sign now. Just a pity there aint any anymore because for the pensioners sakes but its true what entwisi said "when did the upbringing issue start to fail?" Accymel has hit the nail on the head with the "me me & I society" as it sums it up to a "T" and we are worse of for it. It wouldnt suprise me if a smart alec decide some right of theirs was infringed and kicked up a stink.

That would have been in the days when all buses had a CONDUCTOR. I don’t think that it was an official policy though, just a directive from some conductors. In fact some adult passengers would shame a kid into giving up their seat even though the kid was a total stranger. It wouldn’t happen today. I remember a conductor telling me (not asking me) and other kids to give up their seat to an adult or pay the full fare. It was the same tale when we were having a crafty fag in the upper saloon. Words like, “Put that fag out or pay the full fare” would batter our tender earholes. The conductor would also make three kids occupy one double seat regardless of how full the bus happened to be.

Those notices would read something like this:
Seating Capacity 83
Upper saloon 45
Lower saloon 38
Lower saloon standing 7

The conductor would make people get off if there were more standing than was allowed.

Today with just the driver, that sort of control does not happen and the general public are wary of saying anything. As useful as CCTV might be it cannot stop irresponsible behaviour, only record it for possible future action.

I think that this lack of respect for elders started in the sixties.

Re: Buses

I'm sure the lack of respect/ manners is due to the ban on corporal punishment, also the fact that these children often dont have decent role models. In Cornwall last year, I was 7 months pregnant and visiting the Eden project, you have to catch a bus from the car parks, it was really busy, therefore no seats, not one person offered their seat to me, I was stood next to a family of 2 adults and 2 teenage kids (all on seats), I would have told one of my kids to get up and offer the seat but the adults just looked the other way, thought it was disgusting!
