Re: Butt's

smoking is a habit ( hence drug) that's where I made the connection:

litter is litter fair enough... however we need the right bins to put it in....

That way there is no way out of it.... fags ends can be swept up but chewing gum is a different kind of litter when thrown on the floor...

Oh dear Ian, got a real cob on today, haven't we?

Why should I also pay to providing litter bins for people who insist on feeding their faces outside in town centres ... always brought up to believe this was bad-mannered. !!! So, you bad-mannered people, please take your Maccy/sweet /sandwich/crisp wrappers/coke tins waste home with you.

I like, Margaret, (as mentioned for the 3rd time !) have been using a little tin ashtray to dock my butt ... my daughter has one in the form of a key ring .. think this is a good idea, as never forgets to take it with her, due to house keys being there too.

Wonder why the court costs ? Did these people fight their case ? How stupid!!

Magpie: Think eventually will have to go down the road of Singapore and ban chewing gum from the country... seems only solution to me.

Well said Kate --we smokers are being treated like lepers at the moment - if we show we are doing our best by only smoking in open air sites and by taking our butts away with us it will reduce the hostility and we MAY get some sympathy for our addiction

Re: Butt's

If we are out somewhere and there are no bins we bring our litter home. Why can't everyone do that? Why should cigarette stubs be an exception?

They are not an exception, did I say that, did I ?? (In my best Catherine Tate impersonation ... ) Same way as food wrappers should not be an exception.

So, Willow, when you are 'out somewhere' what type of litter do you have then. ?

Did I say that they were? Did I direct my comments at you personally? I was responding to the thread. My point being that if I can take my litter home then surely others can take theirs (smokers included). You complain about your money providing litter bins for 'people who insist on feeding their faces outside in town centres' which is a rather offensive way of describing people who eat al fresco in town. You refer to them as 'bad-mannered people' because you were brought up to believe that people should not eat outdoors.

Look around and you'll see burger stands (outdoors), ice cream vans (outdoors) kiosk selling cold cans (outdoors) juice shop with one table and a couple of chairs but by and large the drinks are sold to be consumed outdoors. Times change Katex and people do eat and drink outdoors and where there are litter bins they hopefully place their litter in such bins.

I don't smoke but, unlike you complaining about litter bins for food wrappers/debris, I don't object to the provision of ashtrays attached to bins. In fact I think they are an excellent idea and it would make more sense to have more of them than not. However where they do not exist all I ask is why some smokers feel they then have the right to drop their stubs onto the floor. To me that seems more bad manners than eating or drinking.

You ask what type of litter I have when I am 'out somewhere' - please note that I did not say 'out somewhere' I said 'out somewhere where there are no bins' and that in my sentence I said that if I can take my litter home under those circumstances I don't see why smokers shouldn't do the same with their fag ends under similar circumstances. (I could lower myself to your level and say 'filthy disgusting smelly fag ends' but I'll resist that temptation ) So what does it matter what kind of litter I am referring to? It may be a sweet wrapper. It may be a drink bottle. It may be a paper bag. It could be anything. If there is a bin I will put it in a bin. If there is no bin then I will take it home.

All that I said was why can't smokers do the same? If there is nowhere to dispose of their cigarette end why can't they just stub it out and take it home to dispose of it there? Likewise gum chewers - if they have nowhere to dispose of the gum why can't they wrap it in the paper it came in and take it home to put in the bin?

If everyone either binned their litter or took it home the pavements would be nice and clean for everyone (themselves included) - mind you a few street cleaners might not be too pleased at being put out of a job

Re: Butt's

MY OLD MAN USED TO TELL A STORY THAT IF HE WENT INTO A PUB OR RESTAURANT TO EAT OR DRINK AND SOMEONE WAS SMOKING, HE USED TO SAY YOU HAVE A PLEASURE THAT IS SMOKING THE RESIDUE FROM YOUR PLEASURE IS CALLED SMOKE, IT GETS IN MY LUNGS IN MY CLOTHES AND ON MY FOOD, I ALSO HAVE A PLEASURE ITS CALLED DRINKING,THE RESIDUE FROM MY PLEASURE IS CALLED URINE SO IS IT OK IF I STAND UP AND P*SS all over you,it was funny and usually worked, but i would,nt like to try it(my dad was an ex miner and rugby player a big man)

Re: Butt's

Eeew hek, Willow, that's me in my place good and proper .. funnily enough agree with everything you say..did think a personal strike .. perhaps was just reacting to Ian's post about why should he provide ash tray for us sinners. (sorry Ian gotta' blame someone)

Ok, times have changed .. more like a fun fair in town centres now with all the eating stalls .. yes, living in the past I suppose, can't see me walking around with a burger and can of coke in my hand yet I'm afraid. Wouldn't even let my kids do it .. sit inside/outside in a designated eating area or starve was my instruction. Still don't think my son/daughter would do it even now. I also do feel that 'feeding their faces' was a correct expression, as usually in-between snacks and not part of the 3 meals a day acceptance.

Can't remember many rubbish bins in town when I was little, apart from some up on the lamposts in Burnley Road due to fact that her boyfriend picked her up (she was very petite) and sat her in it !!

Course I do love a picnic in the country/seaside and, like you, never left anything behind (perhaps a few crumbs for the birds)

Note to Mez: was behind a taxi driver coming home from work tonight at the Dill Hall traffic lights .. threw a lit stub out of the window. Mmmm thought I, wonder if any CCTV cameras here .. almost got out to tell him off .. so am changing my ways I suppose.

"A smouldering cigarette end started the fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel which killed 39 people last year, the newspaper Le Parisien reported yesterday...
The cigarette end, thrown from another vehicle, entered the lorry's air intake, setting fire to the air filter and then the entire engine..."
